Was CO ever under Spanish rule? I can't recall... Or there might've been some Mexican influence there too. As I'm not well acquainted with US history, I don't know. But perhaps that's the reason for some many Spanish words permeating the vocabulary.

Of course, I was ver amused by Americans using the word 'cojones' so much. :p

It was, Spanish then French (though the Spanish actually settled Colorado, the French never did). A lot of the older places here have Spanish names. San Luis Valley, Rio Grande, Pueblo, Mesa Verde, Garcia, &c. While newer places (Post 1800) have English place names.

Then it makes sense. Although I gotta tell you, using words like 'cañon' ain't an easy feat for many English speakers. :p

Haha. There is a place here called Cañon City and I was so confused when someone here (on NS) corrected me saying "Canyon City". I'd never seen it spelt that way before.

Indeed.

For example: El Gran Cañon del Colorado- refers to the Great Canyons in CO. But you can say 'cañon' to refer to a cannon too.

Oh, is it? I didn't know that, I know cañon as what other English speaker's would call a canyon. I was confused because I didn't know it was spelt another way, actually. I knew it as cañon or gorge.

If there's no joke about that somewhere in the Spanish literary world, then your language has failed. You can go back to speaking Latin and hope to do better next time :p
