Never forget Japanese, Vietnamese, etc being part of what most people call 'Chinese'. There are dozen similar but still different languages people summarily call 'Chinese'.

I agree with you on both of those, but I guess I just picked up on French quicker for whatever reason.
Japanese is a lot easier when you're familiar with the alphabet, etc. though.
