I don't see how it's dumb. It's putting the tribe before the individual, making it so that there is a higher chance of survival for humanity as a whole. Certain amounts of self-preservation are necessary to live in the wild, true, but being able to share with other humans and do things to help them is vital to the survival of the tribe, and ultimately all of humanity.

The problem is that usually, when people put the tribe before the individual, they end up dead, and they can't pass their genes on. I don't know whether this trait is genetic or not, but it would make sense.... >.>;
