Certain amounts of self-preservation are necessary to live in the wild, true, but being able to share with other humans and do things to help them is vital to the survival of the tribe, and ultimately all of humanity.

In our particular case, self selection seems to have been predominant over kin selection, which has become predominant in the evolutionary histories of eusocial species.

In prehistory, many humans lived in genetically-related groups, as many do even today. Their self-sacrificial genes might well survive in the relatives they died to protect, thus selecting for altruism.
