Somehow I doubt just seeing 'em swing would satiate the bloodlust pervasive in the culture post-WWII.

So much blood would flow... mostly of the Japanese kind, sadly.

It's a surprisingly parochial society, actually. Especially in the rural areas. Times really does seem to move slower.

That has been changing steadily in the last decade or so. Yes, there are a lot of communities that seem very parochial. But the more urban areas are quite cosmopolitan.

You know, they should never get over the Empire. It was fucking awesome.

Hate to tell you, but if Rome lasted, the Mongols would have destroyed the Empire, discover the USA, and then start drinking lots of alcohol after the world is under their control until they get so drunk that their Empire collapses under the weight of alcohol.

I didn't say that the Empire never had its problems. Decadence and foolishness being one of them.

Yeah, true. The cities are basically the same as anywhere else in the world. I think pretty much the whole BOS-WASH corridor is pretty much the same as any urban area anywhere else in the developed world, plus the West Coast. I think the US just forgot about all that stuff in the middle. Maybe it's for the best, though... I don't really mind rural America, as long as I keep a low profile.

Italy is an interesting case in that, although it is a unified country, people feel very nationalistic depending on where they come from. You refer to them, at least in the many cases I've encountered, by the state they come from, and then you call them Italian. That is quite pervasive in places like Sardinia, Sicily and I think even Venice.

Well, most areas of Italy were independent kingdoms up until the late 19th century - the knowledge that your great-grandfather, say, was Piedmontese or Genoese or Venetian is probably quite important to how you see yourself. We Brits are boring in that aspect, we've been one country since before 1066. :P

Don't be deceived when our Revolution has finally been stamped out and they tell you things are better now even if there's no poverty to see, because the poverty's been hidden...even if you ever got more wages and could afford to buy more of these new and useless goods which these new industries foist on you, and even if it seems to you that "you never had so much" - that is only the slogan of those who have much more than you.

I'm pretty much over the fact that some crazy bastards killed some of my distant relatives some two centuries ago.

Never really gave a shit in the first place.

"Investigate" it?

Genocide was a legitimate tactic of war/trade/soccer back then. Everyone did it.

As someone who isn't religious, it's very shocking to see people who follow their religious leaders so fervently. Or so it seems.
