In Polybius's Histories the Celts were described as visually intimidating the Romans before they engaged in fights by being naked, furiously shaking their long hair, shrieking brutally. So it isn't unique to the Gauls, and the tradition of fighting naked (albeit painted) continued on with the Picts. Scottish Highlanders would tear off their kilts and charge at the English naked to intimidate them as well.
