Because they don't have decent strikers. I mildly approve of this new team, the chaos was fun to watch. The Blaatschapen wrote:2-0 against a birdAt least we know what is winning again. But jeez, why don't we just make Feyenoord our national team

I think we can agree that Ireland and Kazakhstan have about an identical chance of winning this upcoming World Cup.
None.
Even qualifying will be a big struggle for the both of them.

Its not really a bad result - It was expected as theres not much difference between the two nations. Lets face it, both the scots and the serbians will probably be playing for third place anyway.

Let's be fair though FIFA rankings don't mean much.
They're not inaccurate to the tune of 116 places. Most teams are accurate if you take a 5-10 position margin of error.I think we can agree that Ireland and Kazakhstan have about an identical chance of winning this upcoming World Cup.

Well, that's not really the point.

My point was that Ireland seems to hold this position of plucky underdog team trying to defy all odds. People seem to want to see Ireland do well, even if they know it's not likely. Phoenigutza (sorry, spelling bungled, on an iPod so it isn't fun to try to copy and paste otherwise I'd dig up the proper spelling of his name) makes it a point, from what I've seen, to always support a team because they are, well, not so good. Seems to me that Ireland is often one of the teams that that sort of person flocks towards.

Perhaps in Anglophone countries, but I'd be very surprised if they felt the same in Kazakhstan.

As an aside - does anyone know why Kazakhstan is in UEFA when the other former Soviet Central Asian states aren't?
It has some land in Europe. Just a tiny bit, but yeah, that's it.
Also, Israel is in UEFA too, while having no territory whatsoever in Europe.

I figured that was more along the lines of Israeli fans (or neighboring fans heading to Israel) having difficulty getting through borders.
edit: since Spain has a teeny bit of land in Africa I am now writing Platini to see if UEFA will please boot them.

Well, sucks to be an Israeli then. Not the UEFAs problem.
I also suggest to kick both France and Netherlands out, considering we have territory in the South America or/and the Caribbean (and in Frances case, also North America and various other places).

So in situations like France, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, USA, etc does the responsible national governing body decide which conference to join? Does FIFA assign it?
/headache.

Do not forget Australia. They joined the Asian conference.
So I assume that the responsible national governing body (FA, KNVB, etc.) decides on which conference to join, and I guess that said conference can then accept or refuse.
