The Italian school of fencing, interestingly enough, is what evolved into modern fencing today. German fencing was mean to be interchangeable between a polearm and a sword. It was also a lot more brutal (to the point you'd have to edit it to use it in the SCA), using pommel strikes, wrestling, and slamming with the flat of the blade. English school of fencing was closer to Italian, and Scottish to German.

That's one of my options for when I have enough money to comission some armour. The other idea is more kite shield and an arming sword sort of deal.

You got me looking up and there seems to be a good deal of data out there on it all. Harnischfechten etc and what not - and yep, you seem to have the helms pretty much on, though I have seen some sallets and other bits turn up. There's always some overlap with folks.

Again, my problem is with the limited field of vision with some of the slit-visors, and my own issues with claustrophobia. If you have a place you can try some on and see for yourself how it suits you, no pun intended, that would be ideal. Not everyone has that opportunity though.

Hrm. Well, with any armor it is going to load you down a bit. Of course in my case, I only have to have steel on head and joints. I lighten things up by using heavy gauge barrel plastic for the large body pieces. Depending what rules you're working with, that might limit the materials you can use. Still, with a bit of practice, even the extra weight can be compensated for. I've seen folks in full armor do some amazing things. And it isn't just the weight, but how it's made, and how easily you carry it. If you're getting something custom made (hopefully by someone reputable), you're already headed in a great direction, imo.

Not that I'm an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I'm still plotting out my new suit on this end, trying to engineer something that will protect adequately, not pinch the boobs in the process, and not impede my arm movements at the same time. Last suit had problems with me crossing my arms, and it was a little heavier than I'd like this go 'round.
