Truth, depends on your personal preferences, and what you're using it for, imo ... I rather like the sallet myself, with a barred visor that one can lift up for refreshment in between bouts. Of course this requires me to save money and actually purchase said helm. I currently have a standard spangenhelm myself, that was hand made by someone back home some time ago, and I inherited it by way of roundabout purchasing. It's terribly heavy, but it does the job.

What would suit a heavier sort of fighting, like German-style fencing?

'Fencing' and 'heavy' do not parse for me, but only due to my limited experience doing SCA hardsuit. See, the ones you mentioned don't give me enough breathing room/vision range. I get feeling all claustrophobic. That said, I know folks who use them, and swear by them - most common was the great helm or sugarloaf iirc.

German style fencing was using a longsword with two hands instead of a sword and a shield. Focused on heavy, crushing blows to where the weak points would be in Late-Medieval/Renaissance heavy armour.

If you're going for more period-specific and authentic, I'd look up some research on the area and time period and style used, tbh. I focused more on the Italian due to my persona and all, and it was at the time, Renaissance to boot. Of course now I'm intrigued.
