It seems that a dead language is taking precedence over a language spoken in one's own backyard.

I imagine because the students are signing up for Latin rather than French. Because it is something they want to learn. Hebrew was once a dead language too, you know.

The people were spread all over the globe, then some reunited and reformed the language. If you wish to do so go ahead, it'd be alive again and spoken by a people.

No it wasn't.

Well, it wasn't a language of daily use but rather one restricted primarily to sacred/scholarly use. And wiki says it was certainly not spoken as a mother tongue until its revival.
