Good for you. He holds value in learning a language that was mother to all Romance languages. Nothing pointless in that.

I find so much difference in it from allthe romance languages I know that it's not similar enough. Plus it's not communicating. Not saying he's wrong for learning it, just wonder why more useful languages for the world aren't being taught at schools. There's only one French teacher at my school of 2500, 10 or so Spanish teachers, and 4 Latin teachers, and they're adding a new one. French is being replaced. It seems that a dead language is taking precedence over a language spoken in one's own backyard.

As I said, knowledge is excellent. And if he derives pleasure and advantage from learning Latin instead of, say, German, good for him.

That's my point. It's not special, so there is no reason for her to claim that it is somehow lesser than "living" languages and thus should no longer be taught.

I imagine because the students are signing up for Latin rather than French. Because it is something they want to learn. Hebrew was once a dead language too, you know.

I speak Latin. Aloud. With my mouth, and words come out of it. So do other people.
