You could really use with some injuring right now, people need to defend themselves, if criminals can purchase illegal guns then banning everyone who gets them from legal channels won't take those guns out of the hands of criminals.

Self defense becomes useless after about a 7 foot gap. Police can only be there sometimes, and can not be omnipresent. Get better arguments.

It's a lot safer to display that you have a gun, and give the presence of an intent to use it. Using a melee weapon to remove a criminal from your home is pretty damn risky, since they may very well be armed.
