Meh. I disagree on...well, a lot of his stuff. It's just not for me. Sex, drugs, and rock & roll are. Don't much care about the other thing, though; in-context he was saying that he cared a hell of a lot more about freeing his own damn country than what Hitler was doing. (That and he was commenting about how hypocritical the fight against fascism was while India was oppressed.)

I'm not saying people have to be like him, but he's a good role model; Intelligent, courageous, and focused on the end of prejudices. A proper hero.

Fixed for accuracy. Besides, he was mostly just a manipulator. Both he and MLK jr. knew what would get a response from people; their protest campaigns were centered around these because what they needed was to convince the somewhat-apathetic majority. Hence why Gandhi had people letting themselves be beaten and killed, and MLK had children at protests where violence was expected.

It's still a relatively small thing, especially since humanity will eventually reach a point where it's basically a single race. Long-term, not important at all. They most definitely did. It was a discussed tactic among civil rights leaders at the time, and Gandhi straight-up admitted that he was trying to convince the British populace that their government was being a dick in India.
