I have extensive experience in this field. After about 20 hours your eyes start trying to close. By around 30 hours you're pretty much wide awake until you try to lay down. If you have things to do you can stay up for a very long time, just as long as those things involve moving around. I've never fallen asleep standing up, and I've stayed awake for 5 days at a time before.

I find when my insomnia's in full swing it doesn't matter whether I move around or lie still. I'm a puppet to the whims of the sleep gods.

It's not a medical condition or anything, I just will myself awake. If I let my body sit still while I'm at that point it seems to just jump into REM mode. I don't do it as much lately, because I have a long commute on the bus and I miss my stop when I pass out on it.
