The guy getting punched is Yukimura Sanada. He was referred as Japan's greatest hero. He is usually portrayed as a very courageous good guy (I like this anime in particular because they made him somewhat clueless, and you saw how he handled himself around a woman). I have him as the leader of my nation because he's a personal role model.

Wow... there's a lot of history behind this character.
I like it when those big mythic archetypes are give more human traits. It's one of my favourite things in modern fiction.
