Nothing spurs science quite like war. You get a good war going and you'll get scientists and engineers constantly trying to one up the other side. (Doesn't even have to be hot, cold war did this too!) War is horrid and despicable but it has some really good benifits.

I'd rather have scientists working on how to harness the Earth's power/developing a cure for some disease than develop some sort of machine gun that can mow down people.

I know. I'm entirely aware of all of the benefits provided. I just don't think it's worth it. Nuclear power, the internet, etc. are advancements we'd have made anyway. The wars just sped things up.

See and this is the good part. War gives us tons of medical breakthroughs, we have to get the soldiers back in fighting shape fast and efficently. IT can also spur innovations for power as things like fossil fuels would get diverted to the military. I'm not saying its good, its horrid but it does wonders for progress.

That, and we used nuclear science for bombs before we used them for power.

War is usually bad. In self-defense or in aid or revolution against a bad government, it's a necessary evil, but otherwise war is bad.

Despite the high cost and enormous hassle, I'm extremely in favour of adoption, although I'm pretty obviously biased. I'm planning on doing it myself. If you'd genuinely like to be a parent and think you're up to the task, I say do it.

Science should be used for benefitting humanity, not blowing each other up with some kind of new mortar shell or machine gun.

1)Actually I was pointing out that a war could drive up fuel prices which would spur innovation for other power sources in addition to what's already in development.
As for Geothermal, there's only a limited number of areas where you can put it. It can cause earthquakes. ITs a great source but it has some disadvantages.
2)I agree but the technology that goes into a new mortar shell of machine gun can have other uses. Not saying its pretty or necessary just saying war is really good at spurring innovation.

Did the rain stop? I guess so.
A young merc terminally ill with cancer, I signed on for a government "human weapon" program: Weapon X. They got rid of the cancer like they promised...sorta...by melding an advanced healing factor to it. The gruesome experiments left me physically and mentally scarred, so they put me in a mental ward where the guards held a dead pool. I escaped and rose to infamy, partly a hero.

For falling in love with a physical avatar of Death, I was cursed with life. I pissed off a divine power so that I could be with her again, but it failed. After I got struck down by some powerful lighting, I came back to life...as a breathing corpse. Fuck.
