Nothing spurs science quite like war. You get a good war going and you'll get scientists and engineers constantly trying to one up the other side. (Doesn't even have to be hot, cold war did this too!) War is horrid and despicable but it has some really good benifits.

Should I adopt a kid? I would like to, since I don't plan on having any of my own kids. Even though I wouldn't pass on my last name, I could pass on my line of thought and teach him/her a lot.
