Why? It works, but the problem is that less and less people are voting, allowing extremist patriotic/nationalist to gain a higher share of the vote.

I guess we can try the Australian electoral system, but I'm not sure if Americans have the patience to do it.

It's difficult to describe it, but it goes something like:

1st round of voting selects the potential candidates. Whoever has a minimum amount of votes is entered into the next round. Then, the top 5 candidates who has the most amount of candidates get into the next round. And so forth until there's only one person left.

It's like a gladiatorial tournament, except with voting.
