Dar'khan called the Arcanghouls to a stop, having seen someone he remembered... the fool that Nirdasil had given the Grimoire to. "These are his friends, aren't they?" he asked quietly, rhetorically, not expecting his Ghoul's to respond to him as he asked them slowly. One nodded, and another replied slowly. "MMmn, it would appear so." He smiled, and told the Arcanghouls to hold back, as he walked out in front of the party, looking for all the world to be an old man... expect to Jabrill, who knew who he was. But who would believe him? Forevuh stoopid.
If you see I've made a mistake in my wording or a factual detail, telegram me and I'll fix it. I'll even give you credit for pointing it out, if you'd like.

Amalia was startled, but she didn't believe anything he said. He was delirious from being passed out, but she could tell one thing was true. She knew now that Dariken was truly worried about Maven Auryn as she suspected. She wanted to help ease his mind, but she didn't know how. She took a cool wet cloth and put it on his head with the idea of trying to lower his fever or to calm the shock a little bit.

Maven Auryn, I wonder what Maven did to earn so much love and respect from you that the very thought of him being in tribunal was enough to make you faint?

"Wake up... wake up." She whispered in his ear.

The Chosen of Zaiden left, with Nirdasil in the lead. She made it a command that they help anyone they see in the way. They helped fix bridges, fill upturned carts, get horses unstuck from the mud... And every time, the people fled at their appearance, and returned tentatively afterwards, amazed at what they had just seen. The first few times, the Chosen were reluctant, but after a while, they loved helping people. Since there was a whole army moving, they sometimes stopped and tilled a farmer's field, or helped with the harvesting of the crops. After a few villages, the word had spread, and some villagers were actually waiting with work for them to do, paying them food in return. Sure, they stayed a safe distance away, but they were actually interacting, talking, laughing... One child even went and touched a Werewolf's head. The village was shocked, awaiting for a horrible response, but the Werewolf actually whimpered in pleasure, causing the child to smile. It took a while, but the villagers started to trust them.

They were going through another village when Nirdasil ran across a man that was profusely bleeding. He was near death. She recognized him as the Samurai that had been with Jabrill.

She knelt, and putting one hand on herself and another on him, transferred some of her own energy into him. This was normally an offensive spell to kill enemies, but she knew that if done right, it could be healing as well. She winced at the sudden loss of energy, but she could see that his bleeding had slowed. She took out some bandages that she had obtained from the last village and started to dress his wounds, also making use of hot water that was nearby.

"Corruption cannot be destroyed by any cure. It is terminal, and so it is within the mercy of our courts to euthanize those who are corrupted, and purify our ranks to make sure the corruption does not spread." Justine said to Maddy and the guard. "Also Maven Auryn is a much beloved figure. To make such a thing public would create an uproar, and we would have a much more complicated trial and he'd be dragged before the press and expected to speak, but he's ill Maddy. He will not be cured by anything but a quick and merciful death, and that is what we plan to give him. He's your uncle. Surely you would not want him to suffer like this. To have him disgraced before everyone who loved him? That would be cruel. It is better this way."

"I cannot think of a worse fate than what you already have planned a private execution. If the uncorruptables are fearful of the corruption in him then shouldn't they take pause when accusing Maven of Corruption, considering that they too might have been exposed to this disease as well? As far as I know it takes a while to contract ailment after reading select texts on the subject. I have only been here in Caltris a short amount of time. No way has that been long enough to have been plagued by it. I am the one along with these soldiers here that chased off the walking infection. Surely, you can see that this would be a bad precedent to continue, especially at the risk of your own lives in the future. How well do you trust the official sitting next to you? At this point, I personally don't know who here is worth trusting.Especially when she...locks me up without a crime!" Maddy said pointing directly at Eryeil Nendis.

Eryeil Nendis was furious as she looked at Maddy as Maven was led away by the uncorruptible templars. "I have spared you having to watch your uncle deteriorate into madness. You should be thanking me. He had the gall, the audacity to declare that unbidden are reasoned beings in our tribunal, with no regard for what is right and true! He was willing to spew his philosophy of hate to everyone in this council meeting. The very idea is absurd and the only reason that he is not being publicly executed is because we all respect him and adore him. This is not how I would want to remember the Hero who fought in the Wars of Attrition, and he is too far gone Maddy! If you could only heard what he said. It was horrible. He even declared himself as unbidden before us."

A convenient phrase taken out of context, and Chancellor Eames was visibly displeased, and Yalij was clearly fuming. Yalij had to step out as Eames looked at him as he ran off.

"I do not believe corruption is so easily gained, and nor is it easily lost. I have heard Judge Eylis researched heavily on the subject, but there's much more to be said with regards to that. Maven, as I know him, will refuse to use any of Judge Eylis's material even if it would spare his life. I know him too well." Eames Gromkin said as he shook his head."We will have to check something else. There's little what we can do, but Maven has a week to put his affairs in order. The next full moon. It doesn't give us a lot of time."

"Maddy, I would not do that. Maven will not accept it at all. Eylis was... charismatic." Eames did not wish to tell Maddy of Maven and Eylis's conflict, and so he set the idea aside in his mind and instead motioned. "Maven will be in the dungeons. I don't know where, but I'm sure he needs his family right now. Tell them Eames has granted you permission and if they refuse me tell them I'm the Bloody High Chancellor." Eames said with a sense of irritation at his overall sense of powerlessness. He didn't know how Maven could be High Chancellor, and not have any reservations like he does.

Maven would not like for Maddy to know about Eylis, I'm not going to dishonor my promise, nor drag up old dirt from the mud. Eames thought as he looked at Maddy with his branches hanging about. Chancellor Eames was a treefolk and one of the few in the High Council. He would act as Chancellor when Maven was missing, but to be High Chancellor was beyond his desires and ambitions, especially under these circumstances.

Caltris, High Council Building, Maven's Office

Yalij Dontoth sat in Maven's office which was exactly how he left it. It was clean with each paper neatly organized and a huge pile of unaddressed proposals sorted by category and importance. Yalij looked at the papers and became consumed with feelings of despair. He didn't know what to do. He felt guilty, because he was supposed to have been on that Tribunal, and if he had been on the board himself maybe Maven would already have been freed by now, but no. Now he had only a week left to live, and Yalij could do nothing about it. Or for a moment, that is what he thought. He then looked at the pile of papers and saw the last message that had come from the High Thane. He saw the regular letters of correspondence from the Chosen, the leader of the Treefolk. He also saw letters from the Elven King, and even a message from the Archon, though he had doubt that the letter had any manner of well-wishing. He saw a missive also from the Representative of the Changelings, and almost every temple seemed to have a regular correspondence with Maven as well. It is no secret that Maven was adored by the masses for having been a hero in the past and a well loved High Council member, but Yalij had no idea how friendly he was to all the other leaders of the countries in Mystria. This gave Yalij an idea. Perhaps he could appeal to the leaders of the world and beg them to intervene on Maven's behalf for the friendship they all share with him.

To: The City Of Sylandral,

From:The Beastling States of Crystal Spires

Chosen Aryiah Mercine,

I am writing you a request to ask for your help in appealing to the Court of the Uncorruptibles. They have found High Chancellor Maven Auryn guilty of corruption when he was cleared by the Rod of Judgement. They still intend to carry the sentence to the rite of purification on him, which means Maven Auryn will be killed within a week. I ask that you help me by intervening on his behalf. Help me appeal for his life. Maven is a truly uncorrupted man, and the truth is in the Rod of Judgment. You know well what kind of person Maven is.

Hoping you will help,

Image

The City Of Sylandral

The Chosen finished reading the letter and with eyes wide in horror the scissors she held in her hand trembled, accidentally cutting a pomegranate blossom she was tending to. The red petals fell to the ground scattered. She reached for the petals and tried to sweep them with her hands but for a moment she panicked as she looked at the red petals in her hand imagining blood. The blood of a gentle friend she cared for deeply. This made her feel sick as she imagined Maven, a most strong, proud, and powerful beastling, allowing himself to be struck by a sword upon the neck, blood pouring and gushing down until he died of his own free will. There would be no other way it could happen, it would have to happen with his full compliance because Maven was too strong to be held down if he didn't desire so, and too powerful to be killed by a single strike. He submit himself to such a thing, but why? She never knew Maven to be corrupt, but she knew him to be proud and unwilling to back down even if it mean he would be threatened by death.

He is going to die for his pride? What could he possibly be willing to throw his life away for? she thought as her steward left her alone to her thoughts.

Maven, you can't do this, the world needs you. Mystria needs you. I need you.

The winter winds carried the petals upon the wind.

Caltris, Dungeons

Maven was catching a cold and he sneezed as he looked through the bars of his cell and saw a small beautiful red petal land in his cell. It was small and beautiful and he took it and put it in the palm of his hand.

So fragile and to have survived the harshness of the winter snows. A remarkable beauty, but for how long. Such a thing is always temporary. It's all temporary. Everything eventually does come to its end. So it shall be with the winter spell for the hate of unbidden. I see a warmth ahead. A spring in the horizon. A dawning new age where unbidden and bidden can live together in peace of love and brotherhood. A new world.

Maven smiled as he looked at the window. He could fly free if he desired, but he did not. He would wait there until his moment would come and he would declare to the whole world, to everyone that the unbidden were reasoned beings. They would listen and people would be forced to remember these words 'the unbidden are reasoned beings'. The Caltrean officials would have to bend, because the unbidden are granted mind, spirit, and heart. The protections given to every bidden creature would have to be offered to unbidden. They would be free from the hell of having to live in fear of their identities and from having to fight for their right to live. Israphel would be able to return and visit his grave on the day of remembrance without fear of retribution. For the words to spread all over the world, he'd change the face of Mystrian politics forever and pay with his life, he was not afraid.

Yalij however was horrified, he feared. He had finish sending more letters. One to the Thane, and another to the Changelings, and another to the Elven King. His desperation became so great that he even decided to write a letter he never expected he would send.

To: The City Of Altea,

From:The Beastling States of Crystal Spires

Archon Martel,

I am writing you a request to ask for your help in appealing to the Court of the Uncorruptibles. I fear they have made a mistake regarding the verdict of the High Chancellor Maven Auryn. He was cleared by the Rod of Judgement, but they still intend to carry the sentence to the rite of purification on him. I am aware of your disagreements with Maven in the past, but even you know that Maven is one of the few beastling leaders reasonable enough to keep a peace between our two nations. It is with this plea on behalf of peace that I ask for you to help me appeal his sentence. I know Maven is not corrupted. He is one of the purest believers I know.

Hoping you will help,

City of Altea, Archon's Chambers

The Archon received the letter from Yalij and couldn't contain his own amusement.

They're planning to execute the High Chancellor upon his own sword? A fitting example of the barbaric practices of the High Council. Such a death would be a perfect example as to how disgusting and far gone the Beastling States are from their lofty preachy ideals. They're so gone to the point where they will end the regime of the great idealist with a decapitation both formally and literally. Archon Martel thought as he sipped his wine. Barbarism indeed. I've got to hand it to her. This is a rather clever way to assassinate the High Chancellor, Representative Eryeil Nendis, I have to applaud your audacity. I only hope you succeed. The Archon thought as he laughed to himself. because without Maven the whole of Caltris will fall. Caltris will not be able to hold out or even deal with one threat without the famous Maven Auryn. Let us at least hope he dies slowly.

"You also said something about Maven. High Chancellor Maven Auryn. Do you know him? You really took the news so hard that you passed out. I haven't ever seen anyone pass out over an uncorruptible tribunal before. This is normal with most politicians, but this is the first time any with Maven has lasted so long. I'm not sure what the verdict is yet, but I'm sure we'll know soon enough. I hope it's nothing bad..." She said while attempting to comfort Dariken. "Maven is not a corrupt man."

"Yes, I did know Maven. He was like a dad to me, since I only knew my real dad for four days. But the thing is, that because of what I've done and what I am, Maven will most likely die within the week. And it wasn't because he was corrupted, don't worry he wasn't. I would not have passed that on to him. All because of me, now how would you respond to that?" Dariken said sadly.

" I don't see how who you are would condemn Maven at all. Unless you're an assassin, a poison trader, an ore runner or an illegal armstech dealer. You just don't seem the type, so why do you think that you'll lead Maven to his death?" Amalia asked curiously. She sat down and lay her giant broadsword on the floor and listened intently.

He really seems distraught. Could Maven Auryn really be in danger of facing the Rite of Purification as he worries so? she wondered as she looked at him.

"Just what did Maven do? You seem to have an idea why he's being tried in the first place. Maybe I can help. I can talk to the Church." Amalia relaxed and listened carefully.

"Um, actually I may count as two of those things, but that wasn't what that had gotten Maven in trouble. But you see, um I'm..." Dariken puased trying to think of a way to tell Amalia that he was Unbidden in a light kind of way, "I'm of a certain race that most people, if not all people, don't like. They think we are savage, monsterous, and some really weird ones think we are illusions. But, uh, Maven helped me, took me under his wing (not literally though). He was nice to me, and eventually I was found out about, and the others in the High Council didn't like that so they are going to try and kill him, bacause he was kind to someone everyone else hates."

High Thane Nortek looked at the letter he had received from the stand in from the beastling kingdoms. He laughed to himself and thought Well he may not have attacked Dorgon and he may have saved it but I fell no need to help him. If he is corrupt then it is his own fault and deserves to die.

StoutHammer looked at Gundral and said "My lord we must just cross through this valley and we are at Terradin. But we must hurry as of late we have had reports from our Rangers of Troll activity in the region. Lets not tarry lest we meet one of them."

"A kind heart is a gift from the Gods, and surely is no reason to declare someone corrupt for showing kindness. It is a gift from our Lady Goddess Nenya. In fact the High Priestess has been discussing something important she has discovered. Recent research attained from Caltris has revealed to us about an unbidden who might qualify as a reasoned being. The research was attained by the sisters of Mercy when they were paying a visit to Maven Auryn. If an unbidden can qualify as a reasoned being there's no way there's a good excuse to slay Maven for such a thing no matter what you are. I think this is a great injustice. If I were to speak with her Grace about it, I'm sure she would hear what you have to say." Amalia said as she crossed her arms angered at the idea of slaying someone for showing kindness.

To the City of Nilmarith

From:The Beastling States of Crystal Spires

To King Marcitian

I am writing you a request to ask for your help in appealing to the Court of the Uncorruptibles. They have found High Chancellor Maven Auryn guilty of corruption when he was cleared by the Rod of Judgement. They still intend to carry the sentence to the rite of purification on him, which means Maven Auryn will be killed within a week. I ask that you help me by intervening on his behalf. Help me appeal for his life. Maven is a truly uncorrupted man, and the truth is in the Rod of Judgment. You know well what kind of person Maven is.

Hoping you will help,

King Marcitian frowned upon receiving the message. It greatly disturbed him, that one such as Maven would be found guilty of something as horrible as corruption. And to be sentanced to death! After being found innocent by the Rod of Judgement, that was simply unbearable. He sighed. He called a scribe, and wrote back:
To the Beastling States of Caltris,
It is a tragedy that one such as Maven would be sentenced to death despite proof of innocence. The elves protest this lack of justice, and wish to see Maven given a new, fair, trial, at the least.

Everyone should watch this excellent show, and the movie Serenity.

"Yes, and I am that Unbidden to be frank. But the thing is that if you were running a government and for years your people always hated Unbidden, what would happen if people found out all the sudden that the leader wanted to give us a homeland? Riots maybe, over throw of the government? Loss of power from particular people in the state, I don't know what would happen. But for some reason they don't want that information outside those walls. And this is why I am on the run, and I don't think your order is going to be much help, it would only stir up more trouble." Dariken said quickly, as he tried not to think of what might happen to Maven, in fear he may black out again.

"So you're an unbidden? You don't look like the ones I've had to kill back in Suld..." She said while looking at Dariken, "You don't look savage or insane or mindless at all. The ones I encountered didn't seem interested in anything but killing people. And they did, they killed a lot of people in Suld. I didn't imagine that there were some that didn't want to kill others." She said while examining him. "Maven took a huge risk for you, and I can only think he did it out of love, but you're right about the information causing an uproar. In Corbal there was a great anger about the unbidden being declared a candidate for being recognized as reasoned beings. The Church however did take it upon themselves to try and do a campaign of truth. We are not sure, but there may be more unbidden like you." Amalia said as she looked at Dariken's sickened expression. She knew what he was thinking.

If killing Maven will keep it a secret, the Uncorruptibles might just do it...
