Which would have been out of character considering everything he was established as being before the timeskip. He's not a testosterone-filled kill-everything manly man, he's just a nerdy kid who gets targeted by bullies occasionally and his parents are on the other side of a fucking ocean.

That's why I said "grow as a character." A not insignificant part of character development is change. Also, you don't need to be a cliché action hero to stand up to hardship. That's just so plainly obvious I'm surprised I even had to say something.
