"We do like to be of help where its mutually profitable," Nathi admits after pausing to take a slow sip from her wine glass. "I would imagine what we'll need is for our respective tradespeople to get together and start hammering out some hard numbers, see how we can best benefit one another. With the information you have there, you are of course free to enter into the Network as well, and begin whatever operations or initial explorations of the options out there through it. Any agreements you make via the Network there are your own business, and the organization won't put any stipulations on how you handle your tariffs or trade there. Your courtesy and consideration on our behalf is of course very much appreciated. We'll have to see what we can do for you in return."

During the discussion, Primo or 'the first course' was brought out, being a rich risotto - containing shrimp, scallops, and porcini mushrooms.

Marcus dives into the seafood, momentarily forgetting where he is. After a moment he pauses to note the bemused stare from his father, and resumes eating at a more sedate pace. Thus far he'd found the conversation rather tedious even though he knew it was supposed to be a learning experience. He throws a commiserating glance at his sister and attempts to focus on the mysterious Ardans he's heard so much about.

Treznor stabs a mushroom for himself and chews it contemplatively. "Konrad, do you have any thoughts on cultural exchange? Arda's still an enigma to most of us, particularly now that you've changed the fabric of your society. The Dominion has a reputation for being hard-nosed party animals, and citizens of my Empire have been known to mix it up now and again."

Nathicana waited for Konrad's response as she too sampled her risotto delicately. She seemed to recall Reaven being rather a party animal. And Konrad, if she remembered, enjoyed strong drink, though he was more reserved. Nervous at times, in fact, though she had admittedly encouraged that to keep him off balance - nevermind how fun it was.

Naiya meanwhile tried to hide a smile at her brother's enthusiasm over the meal, though not entirely successful. She wasn't terribly concerned with the conversation currently either, being things she often found fairly dry and 'something for someone else to worry about', in spite of her teaching. She offered him a subtle wink, then continued to eat quietly, sneaking looks at the two Ardans now and then.

They didn't seem terribly dangerous. Nor did they measure up to things she'd read and heard about her father - which of course made sense, as they were only human. Or mostly human, considering the possibility of augmentations that abounded. Nice enough, though. She could understand how her mother had once been on a fairly friendly basis with some of the Ardans, all things considered. How different was it from some of the kids at school, really? Some of them had absolutely horrible family members, and yet they were pleasant enough. Still, history.

That part was problematic, whether Morgoth were really gone or not. And if there were one thing she had been taught over and over it was not to underestimate people, or their potential for treachery in spite of friendly overtures.

Konrad hesitates a moment, and dabs his lips with his napkin before replying: "I agree to the spirit of your proposal: indeed, I feel a cultural exchange would be a most delightful endeavor. However, I have gone quite enough against the wishes of certain Kaisserin noblemen by taking the first steps out of isolationism; coming back to Arda with news of a pending cultural exchange--even with a state, such as yours, apparently aligned with Arda's current interests and intentions--could upset them further. I don't think the common population would mind so much, but they certainly wouldn't respond favorably enough to offset the opposition I'm currently experiencing from the Talicid family and their allies."

Konrad pauses for a moment to acknowledge a glum look from his wife. "The Talicid family is still eminent in military affairs; and I must admit they are quite adept at it. Their position is not without merit; and I am forced in light of this to respect their opinion. Opposition from the nobility is easy enough to deal with, but the opinions of the Kaisserin Houses are not to be brushed aside."

"Those swin--" Nadia starts, but Konrad raises a silencing hand and flashes his wife a stern look.

"I cannot risk an unfavorable Talicid reaction," Konrad answers to both his wife and Nathicana. "While I am very much in agreement with the spirit of your offer, I feel I cannot act until such a time as favorable reactions have been had among both the common populace and the remainder of our nobility, who seem to be perched a little too comfortably on the proverbial fence. It is with this initial trade agreement that I hope to sway their opinions away from Arda's isolationism."

The Angsiyan pauses to gulp down another mouthful of wine. Nadia sweeps her bangs aside but says nothing. Konrad looks to Devon first. "The reason for this attitude I fear is all to obvious: the spectre of Morgoth lingers over my lands and the Talicid-controlled Military Court seems to believe that it is Arda's sole prerogative to oppose him--a standpoint I cannot say as I agree with." The Angsiyan shifts his gaze to the Dread Lady. "I do believe Arda is the primary target of his malice, but I would be lying if I said I thought your nations bore no risk, and I have this on good authority."

Re: Unfinished Business

Postby Dread Lady Nathicana » Mon Jun 22, 2009 9:29 pm

The interplay was interesting, and not entirely unexpected. From what she remembered, there had always been some difficulties in bringing the varied peoples in Arda together, and historically competition for ranking and power was a matter of course there. Of course it came as no surprise that certain families might have opposing interests, especially considering the lineage of Konrad’s lovely wife. They made a rather powerful and potentially effective team, the two of them – she representing prior royal power, and he the new regime, joined and operating as one. No wonder some of the other families were in a stir, her own reputation, and that of Devon himself, notwithstanding. Outside dealings had not always gone favorably for the Ardans.

Nathicana nods in understanding as he explains the first part of his response. Leadership always had to deal with such troublesome things to one degree or other. The Dominion’s own rise from isolated obscurity had been marked with its own trials, after all. Konrad needed as much internal support as he could manage before overreaching what authority he’d gained.

Clearly, Nadia was less than amused at the fact, though she seemed to grudgingly accept it.

Rather grudgingly, she noted, understanding all too well the woman’s frustration. Again, though she might have some mastery in certain aspects, it was again made clear he was the one who ruled, however much he respected his wife’s opinion.

He has grown over the years, no doubt about it. And no more discomfort or hesitation. He’s someone to be reckoned with, now. Dammit.

The fact that his next words are directed to both women is not missed, as much an explanation to her as an unspoken apology to Nadia it seemed. She nods again, making a simple comment while he pauses for a drink.

“These things take time, of course. Completely understandable.”

His next words, directed at Devon, were interesting however. Of course Konrad would wish to reassure the least accepting of the two of his good intentions and lack of support for Morgoth … she had truly hoped that particular problem had been solved. Fervently hoped, in spite of all evidence to the contrary that abounded in history. As much as she hated to admit the fact, Morgoth was no normal, mortal enemy. And his absolute destruction was something no one it seemed, could guarantee. She frowned slightly, brows drawing together as Konrad looked to her, more when he spoke of ‘risk’ and ‘malice’.

But before Nathicana could react to his last few words, Naiya tensed, and fixed him with a penetrating stare. Forgetting earlier admonishments, she spoke in a quiet tone that somehow demanded a response, though her posture was not nearly so assuming.

“By who’s authority, Lord Konrad - if I may be so bold?”

Not the time – Nathi signals, trying to subtly get her daughter’s attention.

Something not right– Naiya signals back, not looking at her mother, or breaking her unblinking eye contact with the Angsiyan.

Treznor smirks as he considers the implications of Konrad's warning. Arda bears the responsibility alone? That's an interesting perspective, and damned convenient if it's all a front while Morgoth continues to rule from the shadows. He opens his mouth to reply, but is cut off by Naiya's quiet enquiry. He closes his mouth and frowns, glaring at Nathicana who is signalling her own displeasure at the girl.

Still, it's a fair question; just not one that he had been prepared to ask. He glances at Marcus to convey the impression that such behavior is not encouraged, and sits back to see what erupts from the nest Naiya has stirred.

Nadia slams her palms on the table and leaps to her feet; "The proper form of address--" she starts in reaction to Naiya's query. The Angsiyan quickly pokes Naiya's shin under the table and gives her a quick wink whilst Nathi and Devon's attention is directed elsewhere. A fraction of a second later, he grabs his wife's arm.

"No matter, my dear," he remarks to Nadia, chuckling a bit as he firmly pulls her back down to her seat. "We're all friends here; she has no need for formalities. She need not address me by title."

The Empress fumes for a moment, and then leans over to whisper again into the Angsiyan's ear. Once she has said her piece, she draws back and exhanges a look with him, jutting her head forward slightly and raising her brows as if to say 'Haven't I got a point?'

"I have many in my employ who, as an aggregate, have more of a picture of Morgoth's true intentions than any one man could hope to attain," Konrad offers in response to Naiya's query. "It is true that my father and I once labored in Morgoth's employ, but I held not so high a position as I hoped to project." The Angsiyan spears a hunk of meat with his fork. "Suffice to say that between their counsel and by that of the palantirí, I was able to avail myself a glimpse of Morgoth's true malice, and against whom it may be directed." He lifts the fork to his mouth and takes a bite, chewing and swallowing before he continues. "After all, the intentions of a Vala are not so easily divined."

Marcus looks like he wants to burst, but his father's body language is tense in spite of the air of casual disinterest he projects. Disobedience would not be rewarded kindly right now, and his father isn't the most gentle of souls at the best of times. It's one of the things Marcus fears most: becoming so used to command that disobedience provokes harsh punishments. Perhaps, he grudgingly admits to himself, he's being a little unfair, but the Emperor's temper is a thing of legend. Ben had once confided in him that his father has mellowed in recent decades. Marcus doesn't like to contemplate that.

But...it's so simple, he rails silently in his head. The cultural exchange can go one-way until the Tacilid family changes their position. If the people of Arda really want to learn about outside culture, they can get it through private enterprise like Mama's trade network. The Russians outlawed anything that might taint their society even before the Soviet Union, but it never stopped their people from enjoying Western art when they really wanted it.

Against his impulse, he keeps his mouth shut. He envied Naiya for her boldness, though. Clearly, his father is waiting to see what she does next.

Naiya looks quickly to Nadia as she rises, bracing herself for whatever might come down, then shifts her gaze back to Konrad at the subtle poke, her blue eyes flashing dangerously as her anger flares up. Then reflecting confusion. Followed by curiosity. And then …

She drops her eyes, and bows her head submissively, as much as the action may seem somewhat against her usual bearing. “My apologies, Angsiyan, Angsiyii. I meant no offense, and spoke out of turn.” Her vibrant red hair hangs down, framing her face in wispy locks, shading her eyes for the most part, though she does sneak another look at Konrad when it seems no one is looking, her glance still surprisingly intense.

Half-truths. Subterfuge. Misdirection. And for my benefit, not theirs. Surely not … And Marcus is going to blow a gasket over something. Stupid paranoid … why won’t they let us participate? ‘Oh, you’re ready to start – we’ve brought you up well – you need to get some real time experience’ … bother their rules, and bother their controls! I want a clear answer!

Nathi, for her part, is beside herself with anger, for a number of reasons – most pointedly, Naiya and the response her careless question had elicited. And those who know her well understand that her calm demeanor and coolly-pleasant continuance is not so much a sign of a temper being reined in so much as one building up for a later eruption. She doesn’t answer Devon – he’s made his point, and it’s a valid one. No doubt there will be words later on all sides. The talk of the palantir concerned her greatly, more than she let on. Her own experience with one still occasionally resulted in waking in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.

The younger woman’s skin prickles, and her cheeks flush in reaction to the all-too-familiar emotions emanating from her mother. Yes, she had understood the instructions, but she had to know. And all it had served was to increase her curiosity in the end, and provide yet another point of contention between her mother, and that man. Even as she tries to appear contrite, her body quivers with anticipation, those ‘odd’ feelings she sometimes gets when emotions are high running through her, making her pulse race. Maybe history was right.

“If you have taken a look inside a palantir, and wrestled with the thoughts of Morgoth himself, you have indeed grown since last we spoke, Angsiyan,” Nathicana says quietly, studying the man. “No small feat, that. Whether mastering the stone, or testing yourself against even a fallen God. Between that advantage, these … counselors you speak of, and of course, your lovely wife, who’s position, intellect, and no doubt indomitable will make her a force to be reckoned with, I am certain you have things well in hand, and will soon sway the various houses to your course.”

Here she nods politely to each in turn before continuing. “Please excuse my daughter. A touch too much wine, no doubt, having gone to her head in all the excitement.”

Naiya shoots her brother a quick, meaningful look that conveys volumes at that, wishing not for the first time that they could share thoughts as well as general impressions, though she avoids looking at either Nathi or Devon. Did they guess? Was Konrad playing games, or trying to keep them off balance? He certainly would have the power, and will her mother spoke of. As impressive as Konrad’s reputation was, she wondered. And the way he’d looked at her, winked … the careful words he chose … Angry enough at having to hold her tongue, she shares nothing of this with her mother, impatiently waiting to see where the conversation went next.

“Whatever the danger, as you well know, none here are easily cowed – or easily beaten," she continued firmly, letting whatever meanings might be construed from that sit and simmer. "We should speak further on this at a more appropriate time, Konrad, if you are willing. In the meantime, perhaps our respective agents can assist in making inroads for us all via these trade proposals. In time, as you say, perhaps the nobles will come around, especially when their pockets are heavier on account.”

Dominic and Melina looked somewhat uncomfortable as they brought in il secondo, consisting of Tagliata di Manzo con Rucola, seasoned sliced rare beef over peppery arugula, and a side of roasted vegetables. They served the table quickly and quietly, and withdrew as promptly as possible without drawing attention.

"It's quite alright," Konrad assures Naiya and her mother. "I hate titles anyway." He winks at Nadia, "Perhaps the Empress is a little excited as well. Decorum and all," he continues with a chuckle. "I had hoped to cultivate a more personal tone for this meal; free from the often absurd constraints of formality."

"I... apologize for the outburst," Nadia offers quietly. "Foreign meetings are new to me; I'm entirely too used to dealing with Ardan nobility, who I'm sure you can imagine can be difficult to manage."

"Quite," answers the Angsiyan, leaning back in his seat to afford the servers more room as they bring out the next course. "But as for Morgoth," he continues, looking to Nathi, "he's a Vala of course so he can't die, but we were able, late in the rebellion, to detonate a nuclear device in his presence. This destroyed his physical form, which seems to have had its benefits. He can still be detected, kind of as..." he pauses, narrowing his eyes as he tries to find the way to best describe it. "Kind of like a thick and soupy black mass. We have some sensor data with us we'd be more than happy to share with you, but we don't know if he can communicate or indeed, what the extent of his abilities are."

Konrad pauses to sample some beef. "Of course, all this was after my adventures in the palantir--indeed, the seeing stones are useless to search for him after he's left earth. Apparently, their use is confined to our own planet; I've not been able to look even into low orbit with either stone. As such, I suppose it's possible that he's lingering not too far off: all I can say for sure is that he's not on earth anymore."

"We have established a regular military patrol to search for him in orbit," chimes in Nadia. "We haven't found anything yet, but we can naturally only see so much. An additional set of eyes up there would greatly ease concerns back home, and would put all the more pressure on the Talicids to desist their ridiculousness."

Treznor's eyes light up, and he grins. "I'm pretty sure we can help you widen the net considerably if you're willing to share that sensor data." And maybe give S.H.O.D.A.N. a chance to verify what we're looking at. "Of course, we're not looking to make the Talicid family nervous, or anyone else for that matter. However, anything that could help ease paranoid minds regarding the peaceful intent of both sides can only be a good thing."

Treznor only barely detects Marcus' whisper, even though the urgency of the query is clear. He quirks an eyebrow at the boy, who stares at him with pleading eyes. He shares a glance with Nathicana, then nods slowly. "Go ahead."

Marcus sits upright and faces both Ardans, slanting slightly toward Nadia. "How would the Talicid family react to a one-way exchange of culture? The world wants to know who you are, what you think. If they're worried about foreign ideas in Arda, do you think they'd object too much about Ardan ideas getting out to foreign lands? Nathicana understands well enough when Devon glances her way, and doesn't make any sign of objection, listening to her son's thoughts with no small amount of pride.

Another thing to ask Shodey - How do you kill a God? I don't believe in 'cannot be done'. He's getting at something and I don't like it. And I'm not sure I'm terribly keen on mysterious 'advisers' either, regardless of what I may have said previously about good relations. He's far too confident here. While he was always strong in the past, he could be shaken now and then. Walking in here with talk of 'owing' us, and offers that seem a bit too good to be true, and yet not in the least coming off like a supplicant.

And Nadia is stepping right in line with it all. She's one to watch, Dev. I'm not sure just how much of that little display was genuine.

I am not saying you were right. On anything.<<
}

Naiya was strangely silent through the exchanges, and Nathi glanced at her with some concern. The girl wasn't telling her something, that much was obvious. Something had tweaked her, or she'd not have spoken up the way she did. Intentionally misspeaking Konrad's title, even. Provocation? After all their discussions on behaving and observing quietly?

The young woman continues to keep her thoughts to herself. And while some might expect a flash of irritation or jealousy when her brother is recognized and allowed free voice, her reaction is quite the opposite. She relaxes back in place, brushing her hair back from her face and sampling the plate set before her delicately, watching Marcus speak with a thoughtful expression, offering a tiny smile of encouragement should she manage to catch his eye. It was a good idea. And she could think of several ways it could be implemented - Machiavelli being foremost, given the various traffic that went though there. He probably had even more ideas on how best to utilize, provided they agreed - he always did have a quick mind that way.

He would do a good job, she felt. At least, he would try his best. She didn't agree with all his opinions, and often felt he might be a tad naive when it came to some aspects of governing, but she welcomed his honest intent and enthusiasm when it came to trying to make things better, looking for the opportunities, and not resorting to the heavy-handed methods his father did.

The dangerous part of the conversation had passed, and she was no closer to a solid answer of what she was looking for. And unless she missed her guess, no further information would be forthcoming - at least not yet. Not in front of everyone.

"An excellent suggestion, on both parts," Nathi agrees. "Our combined resources are no laughing matter, as I'm sure the Talicids would recognize - be it intel, or our ability to spread the word, so to speak."

Nadia and Konrad exchange a momentary blinking glance, struck both by the suggestion and the change of pace it represented. The Angsiyan shrugs and Nadia turns her gaze back to Marcus. "That's... that's not a bad idea, actually. It's not so much the exchange of ideas and culture that the Talicids oppose; but rather the change in priorities that such an exchange might represent. From a trade standpoint, this probably means their family owned companies aren't ready for international competition. Culturally..." she trails off with a shrug. "They might complain a bit but I can't see any reason why they'd oppose the opportunity to show off Ardan culture."

The Angsiyan nods in agreement. "To hear them say it, they're not 'threatened' by foreign ideas as such; my feeling that they'd be made uncomfortable by a mutual cultural exchange is just a guess based on their past attitudes. The idea of cultural or academic exchange was a subject we've not discussed with them." He grins broadly with a sidelong look to his wife, "Besides, it just so happens that our Empress is a talented pianist."

Nadia waves a hand. "Bah, you're always overselling me. I hardly practice anymore. I've not performed publicly in..." she trails off, searching the ceiling as if it contained the answer, mouthing numbers silently in sequence to herself "ten years, I think. It's been a while."

Konrad exhales sharply and grins. "Court counts. You played for us at the Serechav as recently as last month." He turns back to his hosts. "I'm sure we could work something out. It's worth considering, at least. Even if certain people wanted to get grumpy about it, this is the kind of thing I could reasonably pull off without too much negative fallout. I doubt even the Talicids could really make a stink over something like this; say, a brief tour of Ardan nobles, merchants and musicians. God knows the media would go nuts."

Treznor grins. I don't think the boy knows what he's done. I think I'll let him figure it out on his own.

"In Devonton we have a complex dedicated to performance art. Mostly we just host a rather raucous Amateur Night, but I've been known to order the occasional Command Performance. If you can arrange a tour of some performers representative of Ardan culture, I'm willing to arrange an appropriate venue for them. I'm sure they wouldn't lack for new audiences around the multiverse.

"Once we've finished here, perhaps Empress Nadia would be so kind as to give us a preview. The Dread Lady keeps not one but three grand pianos stashed about the villa, along with a baby grand or two that I'm aware of. I was never much of an artist myself, but we made sure that no avenue went unexplored in this one's education." He ruffles Marcus' hair. The boy, predictably, scowls and ducks away.

"Papa!" This time the plainitive cry is clearly audible, and the rebuke unmistakable.

"Sorry, boy. Couldn't help myself."

Naiya quietly enjoyed her dinner, smiling to herself as the conversation brightened, and turned to more pleasant topics. Of course, she thought Marcus had talent. They’d both shared all the advantages that position, privilege, and money had to offer. She’d excelled in dance, for example, and the violin. Memories of sitting at the piano bench with her brother seeing who could keep up with who in playful duets, fingers dancing over the keys, were as recent as the week before.

Her mother reached over and put a gentle hand on her shoulder as the conversation continued. It seemed no real damage had been done, and aside from being more than a little irritated at not being able to speak as freely as she’d like, and wanting to talk to Konrad alone … now truly wasn’t the time to press her luck.

Laughing a little in spite of herself at her brother’s momentary plight, she took the opportunity of the distraction to study the Ardans again. If only she could read minds. She didn’t dare risk a confrontation now that things had moved forward so smoothly. Another fight between her mother and … him was something she didn’t want. It was bad enough having to play the happy family at this dinner, putting up with him walking around like he owned the place, having to watch her words, and her looks, and her very presence where it was clearly not wanted around the house. Did they know? Did they realize? If she was right, would they tell … would he care?

“The Dominion would be more than happy to compete with Treznor’s offerings,” Nathicana said, winking at Devon. “Our people are always looking for new diversions, new entertainments, new experiences, and we have more than ample venues for showcasing such, if I do say so myself. And of course, if the Angsiyii would be so gracious, we would be honored to provide an audience.”

The possibilities had her mind racing, in spite of her efforts to keep her attention on the conversation, and her emotions grounded. It was like being on a roller coaster – the ups and downs, calming herself using techniques she’d been taught, only to have another thought fly up in the face of that control and setting her hopes soaring again. At least these people didn’t seem to be as sensitive to moods as the Roanians had. She’d felt like she was under a microscope there, and the insinuations made still had her questioning, in spite of her failures to gain any real proof of hidden talents or abilities.

Maybe a hint …

Mama, posso?” she whispered softly, turning to Nathicana. “La stazione spaziale, può darsi che?

“Of course,” her mother replied, nodding, then gesturing for Naiya to continue. “I was just about to suggest that myself.”

“Machiavelli,” she said simply, her gaze settling on each of the Ardans in turn. “A trade hub, a diverse clientele base, and a location that can be somewhat easier to access and engage in the free exchange of ideas, information, and culture than the mainlands often are. More importantly, its historically been very safe, open to nations that traditionally we may have had issue with in the past, and is known to cater to the tastes of the wealthy, influential, and politically-involved. It could be a good outlet, if you and your nobles so chose, Angsiyan.

The glances and their timing were subtle. Perhaps he would pick up on it, perhaps not. She had fairly free access, and her words concerning the ease of entry to the station were true enough. The systems in place there were good, yes, but mostly intended to prevent people from operating under numerous assumed identities. So long as they didn’t cause any trouble, one guy’s money was as good up there as the next guy’s. Not too many questions were asked.

ooc: These particular words so highlighted delivered in looking directly at Konrad, for clarity of reference.

The Angsiyan busies himself with his dinner and Nadia pushes her eyebrows together. The conversation, as it bounced from trade, to Morgoth, to cultural exhcanges and back again had her wondering more than a few things about their hosts. The Dread Lady's latest remarks, in particular, had quite piqued her curiousity, but she chose for the moment not to comment on them. "I'd be more than happy to," she offers in response to the invitation to demonstrate her talents. "I can't make any guarantees, though," she adds with a laugh. "I'm not as good as I used to be, in my own opinion. My parents pushed me pretty hard while I was growing up, but like I said I've fallen a bit out of practice." She pauses to sip her wine, turning her attention to her plate upon setting down the glass. "I made the mistake of demonstrating an interest in music at a young age, which led my father to envision a career for me as a concert pianist. I know my way around the classics, but when I play anymore I tend to favor more modern material."

"You should play that medley for them; you know..." Konrad starts, trailing off. He snaps his fingers impatiently as he tries to remember, "That one that started with Illikami Winter."

The Empress nods. "Yeah, that's a good one. I think it's appropriate too," she adds with a smirk, "in the spirit of cultural enlightenment and all." She pauses to eat while her husband continues.

"Perhaps we could kick off this tour at Machiavelli station?" he offers, leaning back in his seat slightly. It would seem to afford a desirable degree of publicity from abroad, at least--for an event this size." He pauses to hear another whisper from his wife, and nods. "From there we can arrange visits to other venues in the Dominion and the Empire? Although I'm sure a delegation will remain at Machiavelli."
"I am the Elder King: Melkor, first and mightiest of the Valar, who was before the world, and made it. The shadow of my purpose lies upon Arda, and all that is in it bends slowly and surely to my will. But upon all whom you love my thought shall weigh as a cloud of Doom, and it shall bring them down into darkness and despair."

Hrm, stuck ... >_>

“I’m certain your talents haven’t dimmed in the least,” Nathicana offers, smiling. “As for Machiavelli, I’m certain the arrangements could be made, and we can coordinate as needed to fulfill all obligations, desired venues, and hopefully make a successful tour of it all around.”

Irritatingly, Dunnish was not a language Nathicana was schooled in, so her hearing augmentations did her little good. Very sly, that – well, not so much sly as smart. It isn’t as though she’d not often done the same.

“When we’re all ready, perhaps we can enjoy dolce é café or drinks in the other room and hear the first performance ushering in this tour.”

Having finished off the last course for some time already, Konrad leans back and exhales. "My compliments to the chef," he offers, as if out of breath from the exertion that his rapid eating demanded.

"I've no idea how you eat like that," deadpans the Angsiyii as she attends to the remainder of her dish. "How you're not morbidly obese I'll never know." She looks to Nathi. "He ate an enormous sandwich and like... six apples an hour before we sat down. I keep telling him he's going to get an ulcer or something."

Konrad laughs. "You worry too much. I just got lucky--my metabolism just didn't slow down that much. What can I say? I love mah food!"

"Really though, it was quite good," concurs Nadia. "The best meal I've had in a long time."

"You really want to play?" Konrad asks, folding his hands behind his head. "You don't have to if you don't want to. I know you're not always eager to get behind the keys."

"It's quite alright," Nadia answers confidently. "Hopefully I can render some small service in the face of our hosts' wonderful hospitality," she continues with a smile and a nod at Devon and Nathi. "I'm ready whenever you are."

Treznor gives himself a mental nod as he pushes back his plate. That little factoid fit the profile his people had been building. He makes a mental note to emphasize this part of the conversation in his briefing to Ben. "I think you'll find we all appreciate a large meal in this home."

He nods politely to Nadia, and again to Nathicana. "We don't want to pressure you into anything. But the main drawing room has an excellent stock of Iraqstani scotch that I became addicted to years before. I don't know if you've ever tried it, but rumour has it that you favor scotch as well, Angsiyan."

Nathicana smiled to herself at Nadia’s commentary, having a rather educated guess at the reasons behind such appetites, masking it as she looks to Nadia and nods. “You know, I’ve always thought some men have a hollow leg or something the way they manage to put food away. Then again, its always nice when food is appreciated. A good healthy appetite is something we Dominion folk like to inspire. Besides, running a nation is hungry work – or thirsty, as I’m sure Devon can attest to.”

She got to her feet, Naiya following her lead, and gestured towards the drawing room before heading there herself. “We do indeed have the scotch stocked. If you’ll come this way, Dom and Melina will catch up to us with the rest of the refreshments. Do you have a preference as to drink, Angsiyii?”

Having taken a different route from the kitchen, the dessert tray containing pizzelles, cannoli, tiramisu, and various bite-sized pastries both with or without fruit, was waiting for them, along with a pot of coffee and several additions one could make to it to taste. Small plates and napkins were of course included, but for this more informal gathering, the staff had withdrawn. In the room was of course the piano, sitting in front of a large bank of windows looking out into the courtyard.

The furniture consisted of a couple smaller couches in light-colored leather, with several accent chairs to match. A fireplace was set into one wall, though rather than a fire burning merrily within, due to the heat of the season, an assortment of lightly fragrant candles lit the dark interior. The soft lighting was provided by lamps, and there were either side tables, or the coffee table in front of the couches to use as needed. Tasteful rugs covered the dark tile of the floor here and there, and on the walls here and there, were paintings done by various Dominion artists over the years, mostly depicting the local landscape. There was a small table and two chairs set for chess off to one side, and a writing desk and chair in another area, as well as a high-standing liquor cabinet, quite well stocked with various spirits, glasses, and fixings, an ice bucket already in place, and another in a stand chilling one of her own personal labels of white wine. All in all, it was a room designed for relaxing in, and light entertainment, thus entirely appropriate for tonight’s little gathering.

“Please, make yourselves comfortable,” Nathi said, stepping over to the bar, and retrieving the scotch herself, pouring a glass for Devon. Naiya made her way to the coffee, prepared to help serve that to any who wished some. Hospitality, after all, was not below even the highest-ranking Dominioner, in their eyes. “Would anyone else care for something?”

"I think I've had it, a long time ago," Konrad answers to Devon in regards to the Iraqstani Scotch. "I remember it being good stuff. We make some in Old Dunland too. People up there are pretty fond of their brown liquors, but it's usually more Bourbon country up there. Scotch is really only distilled in a couple of districts."

Nadia wrinkles her nose. "I never liked the stuff. So nasty."

The Angsiyan laughs and stands up, extending his hand to help Nadia out of her seat as well. "That's right, you're more of a gin woman. That's good stuff too."

As they depart the dining room, two Vzj'Nakai bodyguards fall in behind the Angsiyan and his wife; following them to the sitting room at a short interval. Pausing in the doorway, Konrad gestures for the Angsiyii to enter first, and then follows her in with the two guards. "I'm alright," Nadia answers to Nathi's offer.

"I think I'll take you up on some of that Iraqstani scotch," says Konrad with a grin. "It's been a while since I had it and I remember liking it well enough."

Nadia reaches into her jacket for a clip* and pulls her hair back, securing it as she makes her way with purpose to the piano bench. "You know, I think I'm going to save that medley for later. I'm actually in more of a classical mood for a change. A little Mozart would feel good right now," she says with a nod as she sweeps her coattails back and sits at the bench. She pauses another moment to decide which piece to play. "Okay, I've got it."

The song starts out soft, with a right hand melody that trickles up and down over midrange chords with the left. A subtle crescendo and deepening chords are countered with an increasingly soft, flowing melody. As she plays on, new themes and melodies are introduced one after the otner, and she works with them for a few measures before moving onto the next variation, all in the same key but subtly different.

Eventually, the opening themes re-assert themselves; high, soft countering trills persisting throughout as she finally brings the melody down to very low, pounding chords. As she continues playing, it becomes apparent that she was likely being over modest earlier; the length and technicality of the performance seem to belie her claims that she had fallen out of the habit of practicing.

She plays for nearly fifteen minutes, usually countering the low, driving chords with floating mid or high-range arpeggios in a variety of styles and tempos. All in all she plays ten variations of similar length, each with their own similarities and differences to the opening measures. She ends abruptly, after an upward, quickening progression. After pounding out the last chord, she reaches up and tucks an errant strand of hair behind her ear, turning around on the bench and looking quite pleased with herself.

The Angsiyan grins and claps. "Excellent, as always, dear. I don't think I've heard that one before, though. You surprise me again."

The two ladies make sure everyone is served who wanted any drinks, then settled down to listen – Naiya in one of the chairs, and Nathicana taking a spot next to Devon, handing him his drink, enjoying a small glass of wine herself.

“The scotch is definitely an acquired taste,” Nathi agrees, making herself comfortable nestling in contentedly against Devon. She had no qualms in showing her affection for the man, and after such a pleasant meal, and surprisingly smooth discussion, she was feeling rather relaxed.

LOS Communications - Devon {
>> I hope you’re up for a bit of late night dessert, in private. After dinner entertainment just has a way of piquing my appetite.<<
}

She nods in approval, with Naiya murmuring quietly that she rather enjoys Mozart, clearly looking forward to the performance.

The fact that she could play so well, and from memory, was impressive to say the least. Nathicana hadn’t had the time to develop any real musical skills – one of the reasons she insisted the children not be denied the opportunity to learn But she had always had a deep appreciation for music. All sorts, in fact. In her private moments, she often had some of the classics, or opera, or even new artists operating in a similar style playing somewhere in the background. Even in her cyberspace ventures she preferred the comfort of song to help soothe the nerves.

Naiya was clearly moved, watching the Angsiyii’s fingers perform their intricate dance over the keys, her own fingers twitching now and then in response as she tried to mark the movements, match the sounds.

Both women join Konrad in his applause, smiling warmly. “Oh, bravissima,” Nathicana says sincerely. “Nadia, you either count your skills too cheaply, or are a terrible tease. I can guarantee were you willing, you could secure your own command performance on the station – For a select elite perhaps, driving up the cost of tickets? It would go a long ways in introducing Ardan arts to the public, giving a face to the government at the same time – and a talented one at that.”

Turning to the Angsiyan, she continued. “Konrad, you should count yourself lucky. I’m afraid I’m bested here – I’ll bet she is even an accomplished chef.” The last was offered with a wink to accompany the smile. Anyone who knew her well knew that cooking was a skill Nathi had never, and would never, master. Having Dom around wasn’t just for show, it was out of necessity. The last time she’d tried, he’d banned her from the kitchen under dire threats, after all.

Treznor notices Marcus eyeing the bottle of scotch enviously and nods. He supposes it's only natural for the boy to take an interest in the drink, since his father drinks so much of it. He nods his permission, and says quietly, "All right. But just one glass." The boy grew up drinking wine like so many in the Dominion, but they'd never let him try anything harder than that. Still, his metabolism should make up for the lack of tolerance for strong spirits, and a single drink shouldn't make a difference.

Treznor settles an arm around Nathicana as they make themselves comfortable on the couch. It had been a long time since they'd tried to hide their relationship, and since getting married what was the point?

LOS Communications - Nathicana {
<< Dessert? Of course. I'm pretty sure this old horse can stand another turn at the plow.
}

He thoroughly appreciates the Angsiyii's performance, his mind multitasking as always. He observes her posture and expression as she plays, notes how thoroughly she commits herself to the performance. It seems to him that this is one of her true passions, and in spite of her self-depracation she wishes she had more opportunities to perform.

He watches Konrad just as carefully, noting the way he positions himself in the room and keeps himself ready for any event. Konrad is a soldier, or perhaps better described as a warrior, and the habits a warrior develops to stay alive take a long time to break, if ever. But it doesn't seem to interfere with the man's appreciation for his wife's music. Treznor continues to study him out of the corner of his eye as he does everything else.

Predictably, she takes a seat as far away from him as she can manage without being impolite. That suits him well enough; a tiny part of him regrets the distance between them. What if he'd been more accepting of her, had treated her like a proper member of the family instead of shutting her out? Perhaps he's been unfair to her...but he can never forget her origins, of the threat she'd posed to his son in the way she had been conceived. He can never quite rid himself of the feeling that she was intended for something unholy, something dangerous to his Empire and allies.

At least the bastard is well and truly dead. I must remember to make arrangements for an anniversary celebration this year.

At the finish of the performance he rises and applauds. "You should definitely join the tour. You'll end up taking the starring role."

He grins at Nathicana's description of her domestic skills. "Nathi always demonstrated aptitudes in...other areas. For the rest we have staff."

Nathicana makes a quiet sound of mild vexation as Devon allows Marcus his drink. It was bad enough him trying to be all grown up without trying to match his father in drinking, in her mind. All benefits aside, it was one thing for Devon to do it – it was quite another for her son. Irrational, but then … that was sometimes Nathi to a ‘T’.

LOS Communications - Devon {
>> Old horse indeed. If it’s such a chore, there’s no need for you to bother … [wink analog] <<
}

At his comment on aptitudes, she refrains from giving him a light dig in the ribs, though she still smiles. “And a fine staff they are – without whom I would be at a complete loss.”

Naiya arches a brow slightly when Marcus gets to sample the scotch, hiding a frown of disapproval. Anything he liked that way was something she’d just as soon avoid – and did not enjoy seeing her brother try to take on for himself.

She almost thought she caught a flicker of something from him at one point. Something she’d felt perhaps a time or two before, but tended to disbelieve. It was foreign to his usual ‘presence’ so to speak, whatever it was, and she found that mildly disconcerting. Still, it was there briefly and gone just as quickly, and there didn’t seem any point to dwelling on it. Perhaps the evening had gone well enough that any faux pas would be forgotten, and no great arguments erupt on account as she’d feared earlier.

Konrad’s hints still bothered her, but again, she wasn’t sure what to do about them, and didn’t dare hope that he’d speak plainly given the subterfuge he’d been utilizing.

Nadia laughs. "A chef, I am not," she insists. "Noodles and meats are about the limit of my capabilities there, I'm afraid." She makes her way back to the couch, where Konrad sets his drink aside and hooks an arm around her waist, dragging her down with a slight 'oof!'

The Angsiyan grins down at his wife. "You should play at Machiavelli," he concurs with his hosts, "I think you should take the Daturias Symphony with you and play through some European and Ardan classical staples. It'd be a great way to drum up interest in the exchange among the international elite." He glances to and winks at Nathi, "driving up the cost of tickets in the process of course."

Konrad reaches over for his drink as Nadia extracts herself from his lap, giggling briefly at Nathi and Devon's comments of 'staff' and the Emperor's starting implication. Konrad raises a brow and glances to Marcus and Naiya as he drinks, inhaling sharply as he sets the glass on his knee. "They can make a damn fine meal, that's for sure," he offers with a nod. "Could probably teach our chefs a thing or two. Ardan cuisine is more..." he pauses, searching for the right word. "Spartan. In general I like it well enough, but it's nothing like what we ate tonight."
