You are also assuming that they hit. Unlike many countries, the US and to a lesser extent the Russians have very complete elint data and very capable ECM suites(though the best of these systems are typically found on ships and not on land).

No, the F-35 is supposed to replace the F-18, F-15, F-16, and A-10 aircraft. The primary use is as the primary US jet fighter (probably in conjunction with the F-22 Raptor, which is also awesome). The primary use for the F-35B is the same as for the Harrier, and the version everyone's talking about is the F-35 B/C. What about the F-35A, the CTOL version? I think it could hit very high speeds.

The F-22 is the F-15's replacement (partially, at least, the cutbacks are preventing it from replacing it completely), both of them being air superiority fighters. The F-35 in its various versions is meant to replace the F-16, F-15E (Strike Eagle), F-18, and the Harrier. Supposedly it's going to replace the Warthog too, but I can't really see that happening - the advantage of a Gatling gun that can cut tanks in half seems too great IMO.

The designs have been around for a while, this is pretty old news. Hell, it was mentioned in all the articles talking about how the Pentagon wanted to end the F-22's production (and how Obama was going to veto a budget that had funding for them - not a smart move in an economy like this but so far Obama hasn't exactly proved to be an economics guru) and step up production of the F-35, which is close to operational status.

But yeah, as far as a multirole fighter goes, this thing easily bests the F-16 and Tornado, and the Navy desperately needs a new plane since currently all they have for actual combat is the Super Hornet.

Yeah, that was pretty cool. It was also a textbook example of Just Plane Wrong, but...yeah.
