I have never heard of a dress code at the San Diego Museum of Art or any of Balbao Park's attractions, let alone San Diego attractions in general. To the contrary, San Diego is known for having a very relaxed approach to dress. A few internet searches have turned up nothing regarding this new dress code.

I am very sorry this happened to you, Minnas. If there is anyway you can substantiate this claim, I will gladly write to the relevant authorities in support of your complaint.

I've been trying to see if there's any evidence on their web-page that there's indeed, a dress code enforced there. But there's nothing. When I arrived there, a museum employee told me of the new regulations and then, when my mother asked to see a supervisor, the supervisor only said the same. I was dressed inappropriately to enter the museum.

I'll call them and check if they're saying it to the people interested in going. I can tell you the web-page doesn't state anything about dress codes active.

See if you can get an e-mail or a letter detailing this "dress code" and what it involves. Cat-Tribe has offered you a great service here, and if you can get something for him, you shouldn't pass it up.

To prevent further embarrassment, I'd either check the Web site or (in a fit of old fashioned behaviour) call ahead to find out if an establishment you intend to visit has a dress code.

From a legal standpoint, the museum has the right to set whatever dress code it deems appropriate. If that includes requiring someone to cover up an anti-Bush or anti-Obama T-shirt, it's within their rights.

Having said that, just because it's legal doesn't mean it's necessarily right.

Goldenstrange to the Rescue! I took the liberty of emailing the Museum this morning and sending them a link to this discussion. I just received the following reply from the Manager of Visitor Services:

...I immediately queried our Security
department, Docent Council, and my staff.

We are all astonished and no one claims knowledge of this happening. I
can't tell you how much I appreciate you coming to the 'source' as it
were, so that we may set the record straight.

Our only 'dress code' is: no bare feet (safety reasons), and men must
wear a shirt. We welcome any and all visitors with open arms. My concern
is, perhaps the author of the comment is mistaken in the identity of the
museum?

I would love the opportunity to resolve this, so please keep me posted.
We work so hard to make our visitors feel welcome and are devastated to
read these comments.

Museums of Art, not Museum of Arts. The former refers to multiple museums, while the latter refers to a single museum with multiple arts.

I can understand dress codes in schools - kids are easily distractible and certain types of attire encourage that distractibility.
I can understand dress codes in restaurants
I can understand dress codes in offices

But a museum is a public place. And a museum is a place that is there for tourists. Tourists, as far as I can see, don't adhere to any form of dress code. They wear swim suits, shorts, garish shirts, flip-flops, whatever, especially tourists in a beach town. Do they expect the tourists to go back to their motels and change into acceptable attire before visiting? I should think that such dress codes would discourage visitors, which in turn would cause a drop in funding. Did someone think this through?

Reminds me of a story my old boss told me - her daughter (this was in the sixties) wore a pant-suit to school - it covered her from ankle to neck and down to the wrists. The Principal sent her home with a note saying that the pant suit did not conform to the dress code and she needed to wear a dress or a skirt and blouse. So the girl put on a mini-dress (mid-thigh), with a cut-out at the midriff - this was considered perfectly acceptable by the Principal.
