I figure we have ample 'reality' in every day life. Most folks game or participate to either get away from that, or put their own spin on it, I think.
There are many different ways to interact on this site, whether it's just play the game through the choices of issues, submitting ideas of your own for us in-game even.
Role-playing is just one method, and that doesn't seem to be up your alley, by your comments. If you think it's all pointless and there's no worth to it though, I'd suggest you haven't really read through a good many threads. It can be separate universes - that's the beauty and challenge of a purely free-form RP venue. No one is required to acknowledge everyone else, you get to choose who you play with, and what you do.
There's the entire regional Gameplay aspect that has it's own community and methods of play within it. Getting into methods and means, would take a good portion of the day to explain - needless to say, there's a great many players who enjoy it.
There's working within mainly as a government - with the Security Council, and World Assembly membership, and all the debating and discussion that goes on there as well. You can take part in how rules and regulations affect those member nations, and the compliance that's inherent in membership.
There's even just mucking about with socializing, in Forum 7. Or discussing and debating ideas, events, etc in the General forum.
Basically, when you get right down to it? You get out of this game what you put into it. You find what works, what appeals, what doesn't, and you go from there. It's come a long ways from when it started just over 10 years ago, and it may not have everything you're looking for or wanting ... however there is a lot to explore and check out if you're so inclined.
