This hardly seems like anything new. The supposed "Threat to Humanity" makes perfectly valid sense given their interpretation of the scripture. Even if it is bonkers. Now, just because some Catholics see it as a threat to the sanctity of family values, doesn't mean it should be illegal. As with any other case, the law of God is to be kept separate from the law of the state.

Churches shouldn't marry people they don't want to, and gay people ought to have the same right to the benefits and protections of marriage as anyone else. I might not call it marriage, you might not call it marriage, but that's hardly a concern so long as they have the right to consider themselves such and the state acknowledges the contract.
