A lot of people are complaining about guns being so common in America, and the amount of mass shootings we see here. Well I have a simple solution. If guns are to be surrendered by citizens, the state should surrender their guns too.

Now, why won't the state surrender their guns? Probably because its citizens would have the power to overthrow them, or other states would have the power to take them over.

Some states do surrender, or at least renounce, 'their guns'. One of the most famous, due to an extremely well-made 'interactive media novel' (video game), has been the government of Costa Rica, which abolished, insofar as a permanent institution, its own military, mostly out of fear of coups d'état instigated by military leaders. This decision has historically remained a viable course only so far as their strategic regional and global security has meanwhile been fully provided for by not only a world superpower, but one that has (thus far) been disinclined to overtly threaten them into complying with requirements they may not desire. If that world superpower were to ever lose its preeminent status, maintaining such abolition would inevitably necessitate a "hat in hand" search for another such protector...if they were not already swiftly subjugated to the armed force of a conqueror.

So if the state doesn't want to be disarmed, how come their citizens have to be?

Because "political power comes from the barrel of a loaded gun." If you can successfully coerce others to obey you, on pain of varying degrees of discomfort (up to and including death) that they for their part are unable to counter, you can act without concern for their desires and/or welfare.

If the state is afraid of being unarmed in a world of armed states, then how come I, a citizen, should be compelled to live powerless without any defense of my freedoms?

I probably fall under that cute little pejorative of 'gun nut'.

I have a concealed carry license, and I carry regularly. I also open carry sometimes for comfort or, rarely, to make a point. I own two weapons that would be classified as assault weapons under new legislation.

I don't think people are after me (except insomuch as they seem to consistently seek to discredit and insult me as if I were insane by using pejoratives like 'gun nut' and claiming that I am a paranoid schizophrenic). Neither am I insane.

Frankly, I'm a little tired of the veiled (or not so veiled) implications that I AM insane because of my desire to own firearms and have them with me at some times because of circumstances you nor anyone in Congress is capable of understanding.

Edit: Y'know what, I need to keep on going on this rant. I could be an ally of the gun control movement. I could be a friend. Private sales are a portion of the law where some kind of oversight would be beneficial. I wouldn't appreciate such oversight, but I would grudgingly argue for it because, if done correctly, there would be little infringement on the rights of gun owners and there would be a rather good deal of potential societal benefits. But I don't, because any ideas that have been proposed addressing private sales have been drastically inappropriate (national registries) or the proposal has been masked behind metric fucktons of bullshit laws against 'assault weapons', magazines (and/or 'clips'), aesthetic features of rifles, and other horseshit that does jack all to promote public safety.

I'm willing to fuckin' compromise, just not to stupid ideas. So until those stupid ideas stop, I'm staying exactly where I am, being rather unimpressed by the gun control logic that leads to 'assault weapons' garbage.

I'd have a modicum of respect at least for the argument if it was used consistently and politicians tried to institute bans on the number one most used weapon in homicides in America (handguns). I wouldn't AGREE, nor would I be open to compromising with such a position, but I would respect the position as being a consistent application of logic I disagree with. But since most (I only say most because there is conceivably out there a bill that doesn't do this) of the bans revolve around which scary black rifles some Congressmen doesn't like because...well there's really no logical reason beyond the way they look.

Don't you think that if we could enforce and maintain a gun ban so that we get to a point where almost no one but the police and military own guns, that we could curb the frequency that these mass murders occur? Wouldn't it be worth it?

Let's go down the list and figure out how many civil rights violations that would entail.

1:You would have outlawed the most effective means of defending one's life against violent attack. The SCOTUS has held on more than one occasion that the right to life also implies the right to defend said life.

2:Moving forward with the ban, you'd have to carry out forced searches of every home in America, turn them upside down, search every last nook and cranny, dig up the yards, search the vehicles, etc. So there goes your right to demand a search warrant, along with your right to privacy. In addition, you'd see the (likely uncompensated) mass-confiscation of private property; tantamount to officially-sanctioned theft.

3:Because a simple firearm is relatively easy to manufacture, you'd also have to close up any means a person might have when it comes to building one. Materials, tools, etc would all make one the subject of scrutiny. So, let's start monitoring what people buy to invade their privacy even more. Working on a plumbing project? "He bought steel pipe! He's making guns!" Aaand, even more SWAT raids.

Not to mention, plans for DIY CNC machines are available online, along with all the CAD files needed to build an AR-15. So, now we'll have to ban the exchange of such information, as well as home CNC or 3D printing machines. While we're censoring the internet, let's also censor any communication about guns, so that the knowledge to produce them is stomped out. So, there goes your freedom of speech. And that internet thing? Censored and monitored to hell and gone. We'll also have to completely close our borders with other countries, so travelers and immigrants don't bring their filthy gun-building knowledge into our nation-wide gun free zone. To make sure no one's in the country illegally, peddling their evil evil wares, we'll just tattoo every American's forehead with their ID number at birth. Anyone NOT possessing an ID tattoo will be executed by police on sight. No sense taking a chance.

We're also going to have to lock down those pesky borders, to keep people from smuggling weapons into our country illegally. I imagine they'll just hide them in the bales of cocaine or pot that we can't find as it is. This should be easier with everyone tattooed.
