Right because books that just sit there are as good as a trained instructor whose job it is to explain everything and answer your questions to the best of their ability. Clearly the two are equally capable of imparting knowledge and aiding comprehension.

To the best of their ability is the problem. The book you are reading is most likely written by an expert or atleast somebody who did research. Your teacher is, well, a teacher.

The book may have been written by an expert, or it may have been written by an idiot who thinks they're smarter than s/he really is, and either way there's no guarantee that the author is capable of effectively communicating their knowledge. On the other hand, teachers have to be both fluent in their subject and take courses on how to actually teach people to get their degree, then take further classes every year to update their knowledge. A book might be written by the world's foremost expert in the field, but if it's explanation doesn't make sense to you, you can't ask it to rephrase it or give you an example, whereas an even half-decent teacher can take some time to walk you through it until you get it.

Yeah, really running away is enough to get one out of school. One of my sisters ran away from home and lived with a friend for a while. She didn't go to school for the first week until the friend's mom gave her the choice of going to school or going back home, but it was too late: the school had phoned my parents who informed the school that my sister had run off and when she tried going back the school wasn't allowed to accept her (the end of this was that she had to move back to my parents' house).

As much as high school was boring for me most of the time, I'm very glad that I had the opportunity to go to school. I'm also very glad that I was sensible and smart enough to do sufficiently well so I could get the hell out of my hometown.
