And as I've said before, it's a status offense. Meaning, only people who are minors (or look like minors, humans are not Omnipotent) gets the fine. Even then, parents don't have to enroll their kids in the school. Its up to the parents.

Besides, what are kids going to do during the day, if not being educated?

Probably obtain educations for far lower costs, gain knowledge in area's that are important to them, begin working earlier and avoid all of the debts and and everything associated with the modern education system.

Or an institution that gives students the skills to function in society.

African enslavement gave negroes the skills they needed to function in society pretty damn well also. After all, those darkies roll in society is just to pick cotton.

I can. It's quite easy to imagine "nothing".

Maybe you wouldn't have accomplished anything, but I would probably be heavily invested in the market with years of work experience under my belt by now.

Aww... you still have 50 years (on average) to accomplish them.

Yeah, that completely excuses the 1/3 of my life that has been flushed down the toilet.

No doubt because you are employing skills you learnt at school.

I work at a grocery store, stocking shelves. I could have done that without any schooling whatsoever. Keep in mind im not advocating kids don't obtain educations, im just saying I could have read a book on American History at the library in about 5 hours and take away more than I would have gotten in an entire year in public school history classes.

Um... no. The government doesn't prevent anyone from being places other than public school. There are private schools, homeschooling, etc. Lotsa options.

Lololol. "Lotsa options, like private schools and homeschooling"... Yeah...

You heard it here first, folks: homework and sleep take up 18 hours per day.

Bendira wrote:Because its impossible for kids to learn to read, write and do mathematics without going to a prison to do it?

Oh, I could while away the hours
Conferring with the flowers
Consulting with the rain...

Nobody has said that. On the other hand, you suggested the use of a library to be a viable alternative to formal education. I merely pointed out that the use of a library REQUIRES an education beforehand.

Bendira wrote:African enslavement gave negroes the skills they needed to function in society pretty damn well also. After all, those darkies roll in society is just to pick cotton.

Wow. I'm utterly speechless at the ridiculousness of this statement.

Bendira wrote:Maybe you wouldn't have accomplished anything, but I would probably be heavily invested in the market with years of work experience under my belt by now.

So if you could accomplish all of this without an education, why can't you accomplish it with an education? You could have invested in the market while at school, and the vast majority of kids these days work while studying. It sounds to me like you fucked your life up and are looking for an easy target to blame.

In any case, maybe you could have done that. Maybe you would have ended up wedged in a chimney instead.

Bendira wrote:Yeah, that completely excuses the 1/3 of my life that has been flushed down the toilet.

Sadly, you've yet to prove that your life went down the toilet because of school.

Bendira wrote:I work at a grocery store, stocking shelves. I could have done that without any schooling whatsoever.

And my head I'll be scratching
While my thoughts were busy hatching
If I only had a brain...

Try reading what I wrote, champ. Your job might not require education, but your life has. The fact that you've, by your own admission, put away "a fair bit of money" shows that you have some sort of ability to manage your money. Where did you acquire these skills?

Bendira wrote: Keep in mind im not advocating kids don't obtain educations, im just saying I could have read a book on American History at the library in about 5 hours and take away more than I would have gotten in an entire year in public school history classes.

Clearly history wasn't the only class you didn't take much away from.

The use of a library requires prior learning, as I've already pointed out. Also, I don't know about your country's standards, but one of the most important lessons I learnt in history was to evaluate sources and recognise multiple perspectives. You could read a book in five hours (assuming someone taught you to read - if only there was some sort of place where you could send a kid to learn that...), but it would teach you a single perspective, that you would probably take as gospel.

Bendira wrote:

I managed to have jobs, activities, music lessons, as well as enough time for concerts and significant amounts of experimentation with mind-expanding drugs throughout my schooling.

Granted, you may be a struggling student, but in that case I really don't think you should be resentful toward the teachers and tutors who are (apparently) putting in so much time to help you out.

It's funny, because when I was in school I always passionately wished that kids like Bendira would just drop out already, so the rest of us could get shit done...but now that I'm out of school I recognize that usually the kids who are most resistant to learning are the ones who need school the most. :(

You can do that whilst still being educated in school if you need the money that bad when you're of working age (lowest age is 14, though vary by state).

Outdated nonsense rule is outdated and nonsensical.

In the 1700s it was perfectly acceptable to start sentences with a conjunction. And it is becoming increasingly prevalent again now. But why use a conjunction to start a sentence? There are many advantages:

* It maintains an easy, conversational style.
* It preserves a link between sentences, whilst still delivering in a short, punchy vein. (Great for on-line writing).
* It reduces the need for long, wordy compound sentences.

It is not grammatically incorrect to start a sentence with 'or', 'and' or 'but', and never has been, although it used to be discouraged. Now, thanks to the advent of email, and the proliferation of blogs and other on-line resources, public acceptance is much more forthcoming.
