Or "celibate".

He is but there is a tide within the Church already to change policy on this. Recently a Church Leader said something that was rather derogatory of homosexuals and it has led to open backlash from Members. I think people assume Mormons are like some kind of hivemind that do not question church stances couldn't be farther from the truth. I would love to see a change of policy but I doubt it will happen even though at this point they are purposefully ignoring scientific evidence that sexuality isn't a choice and are causing themselves a major backlash amongst the membership with their backwards views.

I don't think it's a hivemind, but I don't think that the church is a good institution.

I mean, the Mormon church tried to ban one of my friends from Salt Lake City (newsflash: the Mormon church does not actually have this power) because he introduced a Mormon lady to the music of Phish.

That's kinda funny. That's like a forum member trying to ban another member but doesn't have the actual power to do so.

I personally wouldn't be surprised to see a schism to be honest. Their continued pandering to the more nutwing part of the church isn't helping. The Prop 8 thing caused enough trouble within the church without adding more open homophobia over the pulpit full of blatant lies and their silencing of LDS Psychologists who have been demanding the Church fix their position on Homosexuality before more Teens kill themselves. Hell one kid hanged himself because he was wanking...yes wanking. :palm:

I'm no Mormon, but that's depressing when a kid kills himself because he's afraid he's not meeting his religion's standards.

Yes - there are even groups among fairly conservative Mormon institutions that fully support people who have same sex attraction entering fully into the church. They claim that 'overcoming' that 'obstacle' is something to be proud of. Leading a het, Mormon life while being attracted to people of the same sex is admirable.

And then there are non Latter Day Saint Mormons who issue things like: http://welcomingcommunitynetwork.org/re ... 007rpt.htm

"Although no recommendations were offered in the report presented at World Conference, the Welcoming Community Network calls for the Committee on Homosexuality in the Church to develop strategies that will assist congregations in becoming welcoming and affirming of GLBT persons."

I wouldn't know if Mormon hate them back, probably depends on the person. Also no, people are assholes and will always be assholes, rom the very first time that Oog hit Rog on the head with a rock, to the modern era.

Although to be fair, in a Christian context, you needn't necessarily know you were serving Satan, indirectly. You could be simply following whatever Pagan belief you are following, with no relations to Satan or evil incarnate or anything, but from a Christian viewpoint, turning away from and denying the Christian faith, for any reason, is points for Satan.
So technically, from our perspective, you are helping evil, even if you don't see it a such.
Of course, some people (cough cough uninformed Christians cough) think you are actually worshiping Satan, whereas you are worshiping whatever Pagan deity (or maybe even a lack thereof, I don't know) you worship.

As for the Mormons, I'm fine with them really, and a s Catholic, I regard them as a particularly heretical group, but ultimately harmless, with their hearts in the right place (if not their souls). Unusual, but I wouldn't ridicule them. Poke fun at them as I would any religion, including my own, but never mock.

I may have overlooked it, but I've never seen anything about masturbation in either testament. And there was one thing I came across in one of Paul's epistles, but I couldn't find it if I got paid to do so. Like the needle in the haystack.

I'm sure a Biblical scholar or theologian could tell you far more than any non-educated person or yourself could. Unfortunately, I am neither, so you'll have to do some extra research on that. Remember though that the Bible is not the only source of information for what is morally reprehensible or not.

My best friend is studying to become a preacher, maybe he'd know... And for me, if it's not listed as a sin in the Bible, I usually look up other writers to come to a conclusion.

People... HATE Mormons?

I mean, sure, their beliefs and religion are stupid, but Mormons I've met were really nice people.

I hate their RELIGION, but I could never hate a Mormon.

I think this thread should instead be titled "Why do people think Mormons are complete weirdos?"

People, myself included, don't necessarily hate Mormons. The vast majority of people just don't really understand their beliefs / morals / lifestyle, so they tend to judge and demean the whole group. Now, don't get me wrong, I think Mormons are kind of weird. In fact, I posted earlier in this thread, highlighting some reasons why I think people 'hate' Mormons.

It's all in jest, I hope.

Yeah, that was actually one of the main reasons people 'hate Mormons that I cited. People often lump the fundamentalist groups, like the FCLDS, into the aggregate 'Mormon' faith. This is incorrect, and only serves to degrade the overall image of Mormons. Furthermore, shows like 'Big Love' and 'Sister Wives' show the faith, again, as being 'radical'. These shows essentially espouse that polygamy is an essential tenet of the Mormon faith, which is a blatant misrepresentation essentially tantamount to saying that all Catholic priests are child molesters.

Mormons definitely get a bad rap, I just enjoy poking fun at all different groups. It's called the internet, lulz...

I dislike Mormons and that's a distinction from other religions (that I mostly ignore).

People from different religions may think that they know what is best for me, but Mormons are only ones that come to me in the middle of street and tries to persuade me of that. First time, it was funny (and we got in long philosophical discussion), second time, it was similar, but times went, and now I am a bit annoyed of their persistent brainwashing of people who do not want.

Interestingly enough, that was another main reason why people dislike Mormons I brought up. Mormons have an exceedingly missionary-like presence within the religious community. As "Futurephilostan" said, Mormons will 'come to [you] in the middle of the street and [try] to persuade [you]'.

Fun times they are not...

But Mainstream Mormons funded the Proposition 8 campaign and that's a fact.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.

I'm not defending Mormons overall, I am just pointing out some misconceptions and stating that they get a 'bad rap' largely because of those misconceptions.
