Why do people hate Mormons?

Today my friend said this to me when we were talking about a girl getting accepted to Brigham Young University

"I guess I don't believe in freedom of religion, because you know, they're just wrong"

Unfortunately I never got to finish the conversation, the bell rang and I had to get to a bus on the other side of the school.

Now, I'm an Atheist, and I honestly don't know a whole lot about Mormonism, or for that matter, even about what ever branch of Christianity my friend follows.

Now he is a pretty hardcore christian, but I've heard plenty of other people made nefarious comments about Mormons as well, even some who aren't all that religious.

Now, I kind of though interdenominational conflict was something mostly confined to the 16th and 17th centuries, and that the main aspect of Mormonism that other branches of christianity didn't like, polygamy, no longer exist in mainstream Mormanism, and for that matter hasn't for some time.




So, Why do people hate Mormons?

Is there a way to get people to be more tolerant?

I don't believe that one is inclined hate Mormons more than one is inclined to hate any other religion.

I do, however, believe that Mormonism is viewed by the general public as very unusual and, in many cases, laughable religion.

People hate things that aren't like them. It's why the hardcore Christian Sect thinks that I worship Satan and that all form of Paganism is just Satanism-Lite. I have a natural hatred of anybody who comes to my door and tries to sell me things, especially BIG things like religion. I don't know much about their religion, but if it preaches "Get me converts, or else..." it sounds less like God Worship and more like the fearful worship of a Soul Hungry Demon.

christians don't like them because mormons pretend like they are christians, and this matters deeply.
i don't like them because their entire religion is deeply silly, on a level that makes the silliness of normal religion seem plausible, and i find the promotion of that sort of demonstrably false irrationalism to be no good for a democratic society.

I disagree with their opinions about Jesus and other theological issues, particularly salvation etc

Some people take this theological disagreement too far, and that's unfortunate.

Mormonism is out there with Scientology, and there's an a pretty strong case that says the Mormon Church is just as bad as the Church of Scientology Int.

However, this is America so they can knock themselves out all the way to Kolob

However when radical mormons rape and molest children, then yeah people take an issue. Just like they did with the Catholic Church. Unfortunately both are heretical apostates. But still...

I'm not really sure why so many people dislike Mormons. My parents really dislike Mormons, for some reason. Like I said to them, though, it wasn't radical Mormons who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks.

Oh, I should point out that I don't really hate Mormons as a whole. I hate their church and their religion is horrible.

However, they do send cute boys around to chat and if I wasn't in a relationship I would perhaps try to corrupt said cute boys. I explained to one Mormon the important role of Valkyries in Norse mythology last year. He failed to talk to me about his religion at all. Heh.

People hate things they don't understand, and I think people just don't understand the Mormons. But they don't drink and aren't down with the gays so I find them kinda weird myself..
