How do you say data?

Postby Germonica » Sun Feb 13, 2011 6:49 pm

Do you pronounce data "Da-tah" or "Day-tah?"

I personally pronounce it Day-tah. And I am from Las Vegas.

Also, which region of the United States/Country do you live in, we'll see if the pronounciation varies with those factors...

I change back and forth. Mostly like they did on Star Trek, Day-ta. I'm from Northern California.

Most of the time I'll say day-ta, I'm trying to come up with the criteria for when I say it the other way, but it's kind of hard to define.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

I don't need to say it, I have people who say it for me. And no one is "from" Las Vegas.

Okay, maybe not. "Day-tuh." US East Coast (NY/NJ).

I pronounce it both "day-ta" and "dah-ta" depending on how I think it sounds within the context of the sentence. I guess I say "dah-ta" more often. I'm from the bay area in Michigan

And here's a question, when you say "data," however you say "data," do you say "the data is" or "the data are"?

I've been known to pronounce it both ways. Same with other words, sometimes I say cart and sometimes I say buggy. It varies.

Data is singular I think. You can't have more than one data.

You can have lots of data. Technically, it's a Latin neuter plural. But as someone said, it's both.
