As I have seen, there is no evil, there is only violations of property rights (including the inalienable property right to one's self). Restitution, not retaliation leads to justice. But that is off topic. And really, you expect children to understand what is evil? There is a debate on whether they should be trusted in evaluating something as simple as a video game!

We define justice very differently. I think that there is evil. What do you mean about righteous violence leading to bigotry? That part I just don't understand?

Definitely not a concrete statement. There's a way to see both as inherently wrong, neither, and either-or. Personally I think there is nothing inherently wrong with either of them, as I don't ascribe to action/virtue-based ethical theories.

Right. And to more closely follow the scope of the thread, it's the subjection of children to violence.

Well, it's not so much the subjection of children to violence as much as the subjection of children to depictions of violence.

I understand that sheltering your children too much is bad. But isn't overexposure equally bad?

I honestly think that violence is a core tenet of what is human. By not giving children a realistic expectation of violence, it would breed pushovers. I also understand that his appeal won't be popular here, but I look to the cultural traditions of my forefathers - famous for their warriors.

I knew it. Especially when you said that violence can elevate you, it struck me as quite the Teutonic warrior frame of mind.

It's more that I don't think violence is necessarily wrong. Violence can be extraordinarily wrong, when used unjustly. When used against the innocent. I just don't think that violence is always wrong.

I think you and I agree on this. When it is unjustified (to put it in that way), violence is wrong. Inherently wrong, not really.

It is my belief that those who fight aggressively for a cause they believe in become corrupted. This belief is backed up time and time again in history. [Staying on topic,] does this mean that video games in which there is a definite good and definite evil will corrupt children who play them? The answer is no, for the same reason as violence and sexuality won't. Not unless they confuse pixels for atoms, anyways. And once that happens, you have a mentally incompetent person for dealing with reality.

Right, sorry, of course I didn't mean that like, beating children is what we should do. I meant subjection to depictions.

And any time it is used aggressively (transgressing against lockean property rights, including the inalienable property right to self), it is unjust, and must be restituted. As I said in my first post, there are places where violence is perfectly acceptable: martial arts sparring and fencing being my examples.

I think a large part of this problem is that children are sometimes having trouble seperating the obvious (to you and I) fictional situations, and actions in video games (or movies, or music, or porn mags) and they develop unrealistic expectations of how... reality works. You know, just like how everyone who plays D&D really thinks they are the half-elf wizard. :p

Agreed. I generally like hearing other people's stances, and opinions (where a knee-jerk reaction doesn't decide my reaction for me!) I think it helps color in a better, more complete view of the world, and... the other people in the world.

I can definitely accept at least some level of cultural relativism.
