I just remembered: The Turks also call Greece "Yunanistan", a term that was never used by the Greeks themselves as a name for their country at any time.

Crap what does that say about me? Being in both the religion classes and playing chess at school either I was the weird kid or had the best of both worlds.

Best of both worlds.

There wasn't a chess club in my school before that. Not one of us was fanatical enough about chess to start a club for lunchtime, we just needed something to do in the non-religion class. Some of us got interested enough in the game to give up lunch-time as well.

There really wasn't much support for clubs in my school. You could use a class-room in lunchtime, or for a while after school IF there was a staff member working after hours. But no staff tutor except for sporting clubs (who got staff AND travel funding to go play).

And there's plenties of examples for that. Many European languages have separate names for every city and area that matters.

And I don't hear Germans complaining about people calling their country Germany, Allemande, Saksa et cetera et cetera, even though they prefer to use Deutschland themselves.

But that's when using different languages. The English name for Deutschland is Germany, the English name for Lygos/Byzantium/Augusta Antonina/Alma Roma/Konstantinopolis/Konstantiniyye/Stambul/Islambol/et cetera is Istanbul. So, when using English, one should refer to them as such.

Not saying it's a good thing though, I remember attempting to find Böhmen in various English maps, until I realized to check for translations.

Indeed. And since the Greek name for Istanbul is Konstantinoupoli, it's only natural that Greeks use that name when refering to the city.

The Turks were calling Constantinople "Istanbul" before 1453.

We are talking about a country with a CITY.

Istanbul is six letters and two syllables shorter. Not to mention being actually correct.
