Constantinople or Istanbul what do you call it?

Never knew "Constantinople" was still in use (although it's a cool name). Just googled it, seems like which you'd use would largely depend upon whether you spoke Turkish or Greek, or the closest approximation in terms of cultural influence or heritage.

Istanbul is the correct name, and thus, I call it Istanbul. Constantinople was never a good name anyhow.

That's the real name for it, under Turkey and Greece alike. Istanbul isn't even a real Turkish word. It's a mixed version of Turkish word for 'Constantinople' and an Aegean dialect that added the 'Istan'.

Popular culture and Turkish history books say it was named 'Istanbul' when the Ottoman Empire captured it from the Byzantine Greeks/Romans, but it was really called Constantinople by Muslim and Greek alike for a long time. Greeks respected it as the name for a Christian city, while the Turks felt that the fact it was called 'Costantinople' only caused them to remember the great victory for their country they won there.

I hope both nations remember the bravery shown by both sides for the cause they believed in during the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the end of Byzantine Empire.
