But there is some dispute over who first used gunpowder.

The last great Islamic empire, and they were Western Muslims like me!! Aside from that, they invented firearms.

I am also fond of several others -- Ayyubid, Abbassid, Caliphate of Cordoba...

good pick! The Ottoman's were bad asses. If they had not been so successful , the western nations might not have found american for another 100 years or more. The main reason Columbus was funded to sail west was to find a trade route to asia to hopefully compete with the Ottoman's near monopoly on land trade routes from Europe to Asia.
