Hungary was a kingdom, not an empire. The empire bit is Austria. And it's a pretty shoddy excuse for an empire, being inaugurated due to Austria's decline and then falling apart about 50 years later.

The German Empire stopped existing in 1919.

Germany stopped being an empire in 1919. The German Empire, on the other hand, continued existing until 1943, at which point it was renamed the Greater German Empire.

I'm surprised the Spanish Empire isn't on that poll. During the period of the Iberian Union it was one of the largest in history; possibly the largest, counting their claims.

Regardless, I voted Byzantium, but it's cloe.

Had he been able to distinguish the two Sunni dynasties from the Shiite Fatimids, I'd say his point would have been entirely sound.

Honestly, I don't claim to be a historian. I just wanted to generally refer to the medieval caliphates, plain and simple. You guys would certainly be right to nitpick if I had claimed to be all knowing about history and the various Empires, but I don't. I know you don't need to prove anything to anyone, but what CM was doing is unnecessary dickwaving, and that is what gets me very annoyed. I'll say it right here. I have only a vague idea of who the Seljuqs were and haven't even heard of the Ayyubids.

Buffy, I wasn't nitpicking - I was defending you.

Alright, I noted that you may not have been aware of some broader issues, but I was basically noting that your point was far more sound than others were giving you credit for.

And CM wasn't just engaging in 'unnecessary dickwaving', he was making himself look exceptionally foolish to anyone who knows better since his examples were point blank misleading, demonstrating to anyone with some knowledge of the period that he doesn't know nearly as much about the medieval Islamic Caliphates as he thinks he does.

His attacks on you were both unfair and factually incorrect given you indeed specified 'medieval Caliphates'.

Nice map.

But why does it claim that the Severnaya Zemlya islands between the Karev and Laptev seas (that red bit top left) are an independent country with American bases, when in fact they're Russian territory? Though Taiwan should probably be coloured red.

Also, does the tiny Antarctic support facility at Christchurch airport really qualify New Zealand as the site of an 'American base'?

Finally, the American base in Iceland closed in 2006, so the map's not wholly up to date, either.

The Philippines was once a colony of the American Empire but soon became a Commonwealth State and became an independent country after the WWII with Manila as the second most devastated city after Warsaw in Poland. We had American bases here before but where turned down by the Philippine House of Representatives. We still maintain and MTD though.

I guess of all the empires my favorite would be the British Empire. It's the world's biggest empire. The most expansive overseas empire. As they say, "the sun never sets over the British Empire. :)

My all-time favourite civilization is the Mongols, especially the Mongols as led by Genghis Khan and Ogedei Khan. I've been fascinated by them (and also Tamerlane) since I was a young kid.

I don't really think they progressed civilization a huge amount...I'm more impressed by their ferocity and their skills on the horse, especially their horse archers. That wasn't the only military ability they had, though...they're also responsible for one of histories first cases of biological warfare, when they fired plague victims into a walled city via catapult.
