Of course, that's probably tame compared to some of the gruesome wounds blades can inflict when people are fighting to the death. Disembowlments, lost limbs, massive bleed-outs...being beheaded would be a mercy compared to the other things that could happen including being mauled by animals. The gladiators really were the last true legacy of human sacrifice in the classical Roman world.

Not honestly, so you may have a point there.

Sure, hon, whatever.

@Vetalia: Yes, it was. Gladitorial combat was originally a funeral rite, probably Etruscan, so the deaths would be a kind of sacrifice to the deceased. That aspect did tend to fade over time, though.

I've seen the videos of beheadings in Afghanistan...while my sense of humor could easily be as dark as your own, that was something else. I can only imagine what it would be like to see that in person. Absolutely horrific, much more so than seeing someone shot.

Depends on the time period. The Byzantine Empire got less and less Roman as it aged.

It was still much more Roman than the Holy Roman Empire.

Infact, I still don't know how the German Empire in any of its forms (Holy Roman, Prussian, Imperial) can be seen as more victorious, larger or inventive than other empires.
