Other: The Seleucid Empire. It was a successor state of Alexander the Great's empire founded by one if his officers, Seleucus.

Other: I count the Nordic trading sphere as its own empire, in a manner of speaking. While they didn't have political control over large enough of a land claim, they were arguably the first provably European group to reach the Americas, as well as being able to force the majority of nations in Europe and the Mediterranean to open up trade routes and their coffers when they decided to come to call.

Not to mention the fact that Iceland had the most liberal laws regarding the treatment of slaves, as well as probably the first working (and as far as I know, the only literate) AnCap state, as membership in the Althing was purely optional. Divorce was perfectly legal, and common enough to be mentioned in their texts; contrary to other countries encountering Christianity, they were able to convert at least two members of the Carolingian aristocracy back to the Germanic faith.

Militarily, they were able to force open Constantinople's treasury, and enable a trade route and service in the Varangian Guard, using a clever combination of diplomacy and riding around in land-ships. They're one of the few groups to have managed to take over at least half of England, they founded the majority of modern Irish cities, and they laid the foundations for the Russian Empire. Hell, the very name 'Russia' owes itself to them.


If that's not acceptable, then Mali. I mean, one of their kings devalued the Islamic Caliphate's gold with a single pilgrimage. That takes enormous balls, and enormous amounts of gold.

Germany from 1871 to 1918. Not necessarily because it was a good or particularly large empire, I just find the time frame that it existed, particularly the last four years, fascinating.
