Your Favorite Empire

Postby Hathradic States » Thu Feb 10, 2011 1:16 pm

Throughout the history of the Earth in general, and mankind is specific, their have been many empires. From the Sumerian Empire of waaaaaaaaaaaay back when, to the Japanese and British Empires of the 20th Century. Each one has been marked by its own greatness and its own flaws.

So, which one is your favorite, and why?

My personal favorite, much to the shock of anybody who hears me talk of an American Empire or Fourth German Empire, is the Byzantine Empire. I find the fact that they lasted as long as they did to be amazing. And I love studying their history. My favorite Emperor of theirs was Justinian I, who did wonders for their legal system and expanded their borders a goodly amount.

I was torn between the Romans and the Byzantines, but went with the Romans. For imperial empire-ness, they wrote the book. It was close, though.

Of course, I'm still very fond of Kiengir, the Realm of the Black-Headed Lords, which you call Sumeria (they made me a goddess, the dears), but it wasn't really an empire. And I've a soft spot in my heart for Kemet, too, having lived there for so many centuries.

I don't know much about it, but I think the British Empire and the Byzantine Empire (if only due to Age of Empires. :P) are probably tops for me. They both seem to be underdog stories in a sense.

Of those listed, probably the Roman or the British. Especially the British which adopted the principles of Adam Smith and saw a great economic expansion during Queen Victoria.

My vote goes to Japan. I just love the culture before America forced her out of isolation.

Controlling a quarter of the Earth makes you an underdog?!

EDIT: And to answer the question, the Roman Empire. Many of the empires included in the poll were influenced by the Roman Empire, many even modelling their own symbols and titles after it.

He's probably thinking of how a lot of British colonial wars started with them getting beaten up, then pulling themselves together and slapping the other guys around.

Except for, you know, controlling half of France for a couple of centuries. "Poor island," my eye.

I always enjoy learning about the Japanese Empire. I don't know why, but probably because it had the balls to go up against the United States when some of its most prestigious military leaders knew defeat was imminent.
