Given the context of your post, you are entirely correct. But for the sake of clarity, I don't think anyone is trying to claim that self-defense is not acceptable. Certainly it is inappropriate to hit another person UNLESS you're acting in defense of yourself or another. And I don't mean from a single slap or anything. But if your SO is intent on battering you, or wielding a weapon of some kind, or you're in a situation where it's clear that the intent is to cause harm to you then you can defend yourself.
In other words, violence should be your reluctant backup weapon, the least-used tool in your toolbox. Used only if no other methods can defuse the situation, and only then if the price for not acting is hugely unreasonable.
My contention is that the poster whose argument I am refuting, thinks it is acceptable to hit anyone, regardless of gender or relationship to him. I don't that that should be the first and appropriate reaction.
However, if life is being threatened, I can understand wanting to defend oneself.
