If you can get past the fact that multiplayer is WOEFULLY unbalanced, it's pretty good.
Oh, that and it takes a good hour to find a multiplayer game you can join, I forgot that.

Well from the reviews I'm reading, it seems like DNF is a huge letdown, with crappy...well....everything.

It's not the end all to be all, but it's not a terrible game at all, in fact, it's quite enjoyable.
Was it really worth 12 years of developement? You've gotta remember that 3Drealms re-booted the game with a whole new engine quite often, so all the work wasn't culmative. It's a great game for what it is, and anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't given it a fair try.
My advice: Rent it, play it for the weekend, and then you can make up your mind.
