New Yorkers aren't rude, they're just... Different. They don't really care about smiling at each other and being "friendly" because it's just unnecessary and a waste of time. Why talk to a perfect stranger on the subway when you can just listen to your ipod and block the world out. Plus, don't we deserve it? We are one of the safest cities in the country after all. Oh and by the way, it's only really the city and the surrounding suburbs that are like this, once you get to the exurbs and beyond people are a bit friendlier and will actually acknowledge your existence (mostly because there's nothing else to do here (yes, right now I live in the exurbs, but I'll probably be moving back in a year for college)).

Also, what's with all the hate towards Texas? It's becoming a major hub for tech companies, especially software developers. There's a reason they're calling the area around Austin the "Silicon Hills" and Dallas the "Silicon Prairie". There are also a good amount of liberal moving there too, the ultra conservative movement has been losing ground there, last time I checked.

Exactly, New Yorkers are just in a hurry, is all. But Texas, well, they are just a little full of themselves. And ever since Alaska came along as a state that's bigger than them, they've been even more so. ;)

Some of the rudest people in the county are from the most populated parts of those states.

I was once pumping gas in South Carolina & I could hear the sound of a woodpecker, is was so quiet & peaceful, then a car pulled up with New York plates. The driver got out leaving his motor running & the passenger threw the car's trash out the window & into the lot. There was a trash can in plane view & just a handful of steps away from the car.

I walk over & picked up the New Yorker's trash & threw it into the can, looking at him the whole time, not one sign of remorse, no show of thanks, just a scumbag with no respect on how other people live. Of course, not all people from those states are like that, but if you grew up in the southeast, you know someone with disrespect on the roads, more than likely has New York or New Jersey plates, most likely going to Florida or back home from FLA.

I imagine when I travel up that way doing the speed limit the locals think "I wish this slow hick would get off the road!"

That has to be an Eastern New York problem. I live in Buffalo, where we rival the Canadians in regards to politeness (and I can compare just about every day, because a lot of them come over on the Peace Bridge and my boyfriend is Canadian). We might as well be on another planet from New York City.

Some of my wife's friends are from Buffalo & they are good people. I assume most of the NY travelers driving 95 to & from FLA are from the NY city area. I also have friends in Brooklyn & they are like family. As I posted, of course all people from those states are not like that.

Another response to this post said that they are not rude, just different, people who like to not talk to each other & block things out. I imagine that is a nessessary thought process living in such a busy place, but if it causes you to not be respectful to a pristine natural enviroment I think that's a behavioral problem. I do, however, get that NYC is different than NY as a whole.

Thanks for the blanket statement there, bub. You know what was pretty rude? Seceding from the union. That's right, I said it. We were all thinking it, but I said it. *nods* :P

Ha-ha, good response. :) I did include "Of course, all people from those states are not like that".

I got one back at ya. ;) I, or anyone else that lives in the southeast didn't secede from the union. My Great, great, great grandfather did & fought for south carolina in the battle of the crater. That battle was horrable & if the Genvena rules of war were present back then, then both side would have been guilty of war crimes that day.

I do believe that if you have to fight, it is more honorable to defend a town than attack one, even if the government is on the wrong side of a political arguement. My civil war veteran ancestor was also the grandson of a revolutionary veteran so I do take a view that if a familty fought to give birth to the union, then they are the first to have the right to desolve it.

I also think people take a blanket view that the civil war is the north trying to end slavery & the south trying to keep it. My ancestors were Indians, they didn't own slaves (although some Indians did). Remember that the south eastern Indians were victoms of the trail of tears, ending just 25 years earlier. After the unlawful actions of Andrew Jackson, disobeying the supreme court & causing the mass exodus which caused a decline of 25 to 33% of the population of the tribes being forced to walk to what is now Oklahoma from east of the appalachians, those people were rightfully pissed off at the union. Why not pick up a rifle against the union with their white neighbors? What I'm saying is the score my ancesors has to settle was a different one, but I do think you are also vested in the well being of your neighbors. The people that fought that war were not the ones who ran the country, or newly formed countries. As in all wars, the rich decide when & where the war will be fought, & of course fought by the poor who have little say in the matter.

Maine? Alaska is far more "a part of canada" since it shares it's entire land border. Anyway, as someone born and raised in Maine I support this. Take all of New England and stick it into Canada, or just make it independent. Maine makes enough food to feed most of them anyway, then the rest of the states have rather healthy agricultural sectors. No Lobstah fa you!

Florida, to either Japan or Spain.

Japan because I want to return home (but I can't afford it)
Spain maybe because of the European Union (and yes, French Guiana and British Bermuda are part of the EU, as overseas territories of the EU member state)

I already said FL to Spain or Japan...

California to Japan or Independent
Texas to Mexico or Independent
Alaska to Russia or Canada
New York to Netherlands (Original European claim, ftw)

Most of us really wouldn't mind, some would be happy, and probably a few more would be temporarily pissed. I would say, though, that we do have a lot(A LOT!) more in common with a resident of New Brunswick than someone from Virginia.
