Yeah even if I had my money I could not afford to go out as much as she would like. (lunch everyday at a restaurant even though she pays her won way is too much.)

She's going to be disappointed. If she's worth your time, she'll get over her disappointment in a timely matter. There is no point in trying to discuss the matter beforehand, as she doesn't have the life experiences to process what you're saying. Spend a good deal of time making her a handmade gift would be my suggestion. When (not if) she pitches a fit, make it clear you did your best and she's not getting any more than that.

People learn about money slowly, and then only when reality violently slaps them around (how many cars before mumsy and daddykins are done with that stuff? I wonder if they think they get to stop paying their darling's bills when she finishes school or gets a serious boy?). From my own experience - I had a girlfriend basically go into debt to date me once, because she believed that 1) we should split the bill 50-50, 2) she wanted me to pick where we went and what we would do, but 3) I had significantly more money than her, and didn't realize she was smiling at my every suggestion and then living on ramen for the week afterwards. I've also run into ones who think I ought to pay for everything, not because I can (which may or may not be true), but because they've never picked up their own tab in their life and the idea is genuinely incomprehensible to them. They learn or they don't.

A "fair match" should be reckoned not in dollars but in percentages, I think. Splittling a bill 50-50 when one of you makes 25k and one of you makes 75k is seriously exploitive of the poorer one. Most people have to be shown this personally to "get" it though.

2. What on gods green earth is there to do on Long Island or New York City that's affordable and romantic.

1. She won't realize this until she's out on her own and has to pay her own bills. Even then, she may spend TONS of money, not only depleting her own money, but racking up debt on her credit cards. Honestly if I was her parents, I'd kick her out and cut off all funding. Let her slum it up in order to wake her up to the reality of the world.

2. I have nothing to say on this, since I have never been to Long Island or NYC.

If I didn't have the money, I'd tried to explain to her that the gift I got her is symbolic of something (make up some crap). If she was pissed about it, well, I'd get a new girlfriend. Unless of course she's wealthy, really hot, or very kinky in bed.
