Which is sort of my point, as much as I hate agreeing with you. It's quite possible to have a civil rights movement without the hedonistic apsects of Pride, whether real of perceived. We need to emphasise how gays are the same as everyone else and perfectly normal, not how different we are. Sure, Prides had a use once, but not any more - and they've evolved into something else entirely to boot.

On the other hand, why does everything gay people do need necessarily be for the cause of advancing gay rights? Whether pride movements help or hurt civil rights developments is not in and of itself a necessity for its own validity.

Which....is fine, but I fail to see how that addresses what I was saying. Helertia and I were discussing whether more..."hedonistic" pride events help or hurt the gay civil rights movement, and whether pride events should be judged on that criteria solely (or even at all).

The fact that gays like to meet other gays for obvious reasons is...fairly a truism, but doesn't really relate to the conversation going on between us...

Indeed. "Some people think pride parades are fun" is in itself a legitimate reason to have pride parades.

(Plus, honestly, this idea that pride parades largely consist of naked people humping each other in the street or something is just...bizarre. I've only managed to attend one such parade in person, but I have numerous friends who march in their local ones every year, and both my own experience and the pictures I've seen lead me to believe that there's generally a lot more people wearing rainbow t-shirts than there are people wearing assless chaps. Heck, my friend's church marches in Boston Pride every year, carrying banners that say things like "GOD LOVES EVERYONE." Pretty obscene, huh?)

Only problem with that, is that homosexuality was declared NOT a mental illness in the 70s, so the DSM-IV and beyond, does not list Homosexuality as a mental illness. Try again.
