The meaning of words.

Postby Nanatsu no Tsuki » Sat Jan 15, 2011 5:17 pm

This has been done before. With NS having such a motley bunch of people from different nationalities, I am curious as to the meaning of certain words in your respective languages.

For example, 'curva', in Spanish, means 'curve'. Yet, IIRC, it's either Polish or Finnish where the word 'curva' stands for 'whore'.

Along those lines, NSG, which words in your language mean something entirely different in other languages?

The word 'cum' in Latin, meaning 'with', 'while', or 'when'.

Many laughs were had when I first learned that word.

When learning French as a kid, I remember much amusement among my companions when we discovered that you shouldn't try using what seemed like a reasonable cognate when saying that a food had no preservatives, since "sans preservatifs" meant "without condoms." While I think everyone hopes their food is made without condoms, pointing it out still might get you some odd looks. :)

Condoms in English means something entirely different from Mike's language, in Mike's language, it is something you aren't wearing while having sex, much like pulling out is something you won't do in my language.

There are plenty of giggle worthy ones... none of which I can remember at the moment. Of course there are differences between dialects in Spanish. If the OP told me to kill a "bicho," I might be slightly confused.

From my admittedly limited experience of Mike's language, all words seem to be pronounced "Mike." *nod*

Mike's language is very confusing. Sometimes you mean what you say and sometimes you don't.

You also don't want to say that you're full by saying "Je suis plein" because it's a very crude way of saying "I'm pregnant". Instead you should say something like "J'ai assez/trop mangé".

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

I remember a discussion that English was one of the hardest languages to learn because we had not only inconsistence grammar, and different words for the same thing dependent on circumstances, (beef vs cow) but has emphasis, tonal connotations, non-phonetic spelling, and a dearth of particles.

the one thing we don't have is gender in most nouns, which is a small consolation.

later in the video he deals with were the term upset comes from and its great.
the sequel deals with were many brand names came from.
