I knew I should've created this thread before this kind of thing happened, but alas. Enjoy your circle-jerk.

Bye then.

The first word of the title of this thread is 'sexist'- thus the whole thread about this event has been refocussed away from any other issues surrounding this, such as the disunity within the Anglican Church and the trend towards reconciliation and closer ties between mainstream churches, onto a bitchfest about the Church's alleged sexism vis-á-vis the ordination of women. Since actually arguing on NSG Church threads would probably lead me towards a heart attack by the time I'm 20, I'm off and you can enjoy toying with some poor sod who's got 30 posts instead.

I may come back if my masochistic side re-emerges.

Forgive me if I think sexism vis-á-vis ordination of women is more worthy of discussion than disunity within the Anglican Church and reconciliation and all that.

I think this is a great idea. All the assholes of the world's religions should convert to Catholicism, so we can have all the assholes in one place. Easier to avoid them that way.

I think it would be greatly to the benefit of the Anglican church if all the people who oppose equality for women left it. Pity for Catholics.

Well, it's not like the core of the Catholic Church is a beacon of equality or anything of the sort so don't pity them.

Seriously, I wish that the Catholic Church, as someone who was raised as a Catholic, would get on with the program and friggin' come into the new millennium already.

If the current scandals the church is sunk in are anything, I would say the Catholic Church's reputation is on the rocks. They are getting what's coming for them, have no doubts. You can't go on hurting and repressing people without getting what's coming for you at some point.

Now, an explanation. I do not doubt, for a second, that many Catholics are good and that, in living by the precepts of their faith, they wish to do good. My contention, if my words aren't clear enough, is with the core (authority) of the Church.

I don't even understand how somebody can ask that question in the first place. If you are saying "I do not want this person to hold this job because of their gender," then that's pure sexism.

For example, when I was going in for my first pelvic exam, I told my parents that I wanted a woman doctor to give me the exam. That was sexist on my part. That doesn't necessarily mean it was a bad choice (sometimes sexist choices also happen to be good choices, and sometimes they don't), it just means that I was being sexist when I demanded that the doctor who helped me be female rather than male.

Likewise, some people say "I only want a male priest." That is sexist. I'm not going to argue that they can't feel that way...of course they can! I'm not going to argue that they should be forced to have a female priest...of course they shouldn't! They are free to feel how they feel, and if they only want to see male priests then they should be free to discriminate in their personal life if that's what they choose. I just don't see why they would shy away from admitting their sexism. Of course they're sexist. Most people are, at one point or another, and that includes feminists (like me!).

married epsicopal priests can convert and both remain priests and remain married.

For the record, there's nothing new in this. The Catholics have a habit of making ad hoc political exceptions over clerical celibacy. Eastern Rite Catholic churches (ie, the minority within traditionally Eastern Orthodox churches that accepted the primacy of the Pope between the 16th and 19th centuries) have had married parish clergy for centuries, as is the tradition in the Orthodox Church proper (though bishops in both Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholic churches are celibate monks).

In other words, there are so many exceptions to clerical celibacy within the Catholic Church, it makes you wonder why the Catholic Church proper bothers to pretend celibacy is a clerical requirement.

Mail is heavy and expensive. Leather would probably do fine, and is more seasonal. (Mail in winter? Brrr)

Wasn't it part of the hooohah over the reformation? The fact that clerical celibacy isn't mentioned in the bible?

Oh no, not the church. The Catholics. There's are plenty of perfectly decent Catholics, and it'd be nice for them if the Church could follow their lead.

It clearly states in the Bible that the Position of Clergy is not meant for women, in the sense that they may teach.
