I agree with you that it is wrong to put such a barrier to getting to work on people but I do have to say contrary to what one may think the highways I've seen were pretty good.

People who can't afford cars would already be "prisoners" by your definition, I don't think being charged for your use of roads can be reasonably defined as forced imprisonment. At that, it isn't as if you can't just walk, people have done it for centuries, not as easy no, but driving is not a right.

I'd hardly consider roads in the Netherlands and the US to be comparable--if for no other reason, but the simple scale issue. The US is some 234 times larger than The Netherlands--and there are some very real scale issues to consider.

True but he was comparing roads in well developed areas of the respective countries to an extremely rural area of Russia on a road that is not even intended to be used for much of the year.

It was just an example. Everyone is crying about how bad the roads are in the US. They aren't. They may not be quite as good as roads in Germany, but we also pay much less in taxes. I am fucking tired of all these pampered Americans slinging shit without knowing a god damn thing about anything outside of the US. It's disgusting. That's one of the biggest reasons I am glad I was not born in the US. I don't take it for granted.

Germany is the only country in the world that is more car obsessed then the US... But still I would not say their roads are that much better then US roads. Seem kinda equal to me? Unless you compare the really bad parts of the US.

My point exactly.

Although if you compare the autobahn to the interstate, the autobahn is better. The Germans also spend about double per mile of autobahn, what we spend per mile of the interstate on construction and maintenance.
