For my first thread on this forum, I wanted to do a topic that is simple. What was your favorite subject in elementary/primary school?

For me, it was Social Studies. I loved maps and history, and reading about foreign cultures. I quite enjoyed reading about the Aztecs and Incas in the 5th grade. I also enjoyed reading stories in English class, but I never liked grammar.

What about you?

I used to like math when I was in Elementary.

Not so much when I grew older...

Physics, when we got too far ahead of the syllabus our teacher would play Tom & Jerry cartoons and take us through the history and phases with great knowledge - he was a fanatic. He also helped design the nose of the Concorde and was just a great guy in general.

I liked science and art and music. To a lesser extent I liked math (because I was good at it).

"Foreign language" was sort of my default in elementary school education. I was in French Immersion so most of my classes were in French (I didn't have any classes in English other than gym and music until grade 3).

No you haven't. It is hard. Hell, even integral calculus scares me.

Do you live in Canada? I don't think they do immersion like that in America.

We didn't really have "subjects". We just sat in a classroom and the teacher taught us subjects in no particular order.

Can't think of anything I liked either.

Yes.

Unless of course it's not OK for a woman to ask for a female to ask for a female officer to carry out body checks. In which case, the answer would be no.

We all wonder the point sometimes, Mike. Sometimes I think the point of learning itself is self betterment, that's all.

Yes, I live in Canada.

It's a shame that early second language immersion isn't an option everywhere (it's not even everywhere in Canada, e.g. New Brunswick, the only officially bilingual province pulled this as an option). Aside from the fact only way to speak a language as a native speaker is to learn it early and people lose the ability to learn a new language fluently as they get older. I'm also not sure on this, but it seems that people who learn a second language early tend to be able to learn a third (or fourth or fifth...) more easily. Although I can't base that last thought on studies, but looking at some of the people I know who speak many languages (which isn't a lot, granted) this seems to be the case.

About what age, do you think, language learning ability slows? I know some people who take up languages at adult age, and it seems easy for them. Some people have natural talents for languages, young and old.

I really wish language learning in American schools had a bit more substance, as well. Students need to be able to really use and learn their new language in a dynamic way. I hate the whole boring word memorization shtick that most classes have, and would enjoy something a bit more beneficial to the mind. Something more analytic.

Well, I wouldn't deny that different people have different abilities when it comes to language acquisition... and apparently I might be totally wrong about second language acquisition at all based on reading wiki (well, at least in a major way). Heh.

I do think that I got a lot out of the programme though and I think it's useful.

I accidentally voted as though the question applied to High School (yrs 7-12) and said Science.

In Primary School (yrs 3-6) it was more Art, though I liked the small amount of science we got too.

Language learning ability... that depends on what aspect. Detecting dialect and tone becomes incredibly hard after age 10, for example. So, don't worry Dakini, you're right (up until the 3rd and 4th language bit, which would not be surprising, but I don't have any supporting literature at the moment).
