The Greatest Generation?

Postby Cennora » Mon Jan 10, 2011 3:09 pm

I was reminded of a quote I read a couple years back where a World War 2 vet commented on the current generation of US fighting men and women, saying that he feels that those men and women in the US Armed Forces in today's conflicts (Iraq and Afghanistan) are to be commended more than his generation of soldiers. If I remember correctly he stated that he felt this way because those citizens who are joining the military now are joining and fighting even though it is a very unpopular war, but they are still volunteering to go.

Im not trying to start an argument or debate on the merits of the current conflicts, just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this.

I think our soldiers are far and away more heroic and deserving of my respect than the asshole politicians and bureaucrats exploiting them to forward the goals of their corporate masters.

Agreed. It makes me sick to see all the people, who do not realize that the military men and women do not choose the where, who, and why they fight, blindly criticize those who are putting their lives at risk on a daily basis.

Damn right, over here in the UK the Islamic extremist and Anti-war groups protest our troops. It's disgusting to watch as innocent people just serving their country take flak AT HOME in place of the politicians who waged it. Makes me sick. God help the West if we ever come under actual attack. We're scaring away professional troops who're willing to die for us to sleep at night.... do these people want us to have to enforce conscription in such an event? -.-

Anyone who volunteered for the military after we invaded Iraq deserves the flak. They could have done something else with their life. Why should I respect someone who VOLUNTEERED to fight for an unjust cause? This isn't like Vietnam where people were drafted into it.

We actually had a guest speaker talk to my class about Vietnam. He said that throughout the whole experience of Vietnam, one of the things that stuck with him the most was getting a letter from someone he didn`t know calling him a "baby-murderer". Sickening.

I don't know quite what to think. On one hand, there's all the usual support our troops stuff, which seems like a pretty good idea. But on the other hand, those that joined after 2003 knew they were volunteering for an unjust and stupid war; there motives deserve closer scrutiny than others.

Ill eventually have to enlist regardless due to my family being un-able to pay for scholarships. even with advanced classes, scholarships, and a technical certification, it probably wont be enough :(

In which case the motives more than excuse the action.

They choose to serve in the military, which is basically serving whichever group is in power. So really, I'd say they do.

Though they're not all bad---many of them are legitimately trying to do good.

The greatest generation was shorty after humans had evolved to be anatomically modern.
We were in a world full of wonder and amazement, powered by only our ambition and survivalist instincts.
As humans we could understand far more than the animals around us, but we were at the most basic, most purest state of being human.
Humans AREN'T monkeys, they're apes.

As an atheist, my view is that all religions are equally as true as the last.
Hehehe :)

YOU HAVE BEEN CONDITIONED SINCE BIRTH
THINKof how many references to "god" you say in your daily life,
"God!", "Damn it!", "Hell!", "Oh lord!", "Bless you", "holy shit!", "Godspeed" etc.
THINK of all the war propaganda you endure every day
NEWS, VIDEO GAMES, MOVIES, MUSIC, COMMERCIALS.
THINK of how avid consumerism is a part of your life.
Brand loyalty, Commercialism, Drug company monopolies, Class dictated by wealth, Bailouts.
CAPITALISM IS NOT THE SAME AS CONSUMERISM.

Relax....

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

The fact that they are willing to lay their life on the line for you is worthy of your respect, all other factors aside. And BTW, the vast majority of people who served in Nam were volunteers.

Exactly, which is why it's incredibly important that we don't politicize the troops. We can all be proud of them, and let's take care of them most importantly.
