The suspect Loughner was described by a former classmate as a pot-smoking loner, and the Army said he tried to enlist in December 2008 but was rejected for reasons not disclosed.

In one of several Youtube videos, which featured text against a dark background, Loughner described inventing a new U.S. currency and complained about the illiteracy rate among people living in Giffords' congressional district in Arizona.

"I know who's listening: Government Officials, and the People," Loughner wrote. "Nearly all the people, who don't know this accurate information of a new currency, aren't aware of mind control and brainwash methods."

And in a reading of one of his (I'm assuming final) posts he stated that he could not trust the government because of "the ratifications" and that it was "implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar" so sayeth Fox News.

Yep, sounds like he was a forward thinking and totally sane but hate-filled Republican. Or maybe he was more like the tin-foil mad hatters that listen to Alex Jones' podcasts.

I personally doubt he read half the books he listed. Mein Kampf is a pain in the ass to read it took me about a year of reading with most of it finding something else to read because I was bored.

It was symbolic. It means that they were targeting the seat, not the person.

Mentally stable people know that, a mentally unstable person might not. I am not accusing the Tea Party of attracting mentally unstable people, both sides already had plenty long before they even existed, but they are the ones using inflammatory rhetoric and gun symbolism. Whether this is connected to them or not they should be more careful with their choices of words and symbol, if for no other reason than that they have a wide reach and it only takes one crazy person to cause a tragedy.

I have no actual theory on who did this: drug cartel, psycho who took the symbolic message too literally, both sound highly plausible until I hear more evidence. I just think that people should think before they speak; if your voice is loud enough, even your smallest words can have consequences.
