nah. the context is semi-anonymous death threats and lone wolf political violence in the united states. while we may have had our heyday - fuckers, we invented the cart bomb - since the 50s the far right has utterly dominated the field.

I would say after the seventies. The militant Black Panthers, Socialist terrorists organizations (Weather Underground), violent hippie children (they were not all peace and flowers), ect. I might even push it back to the ninties, since Regean took office in the eighties, and it wouldn't make sense to hate on your hero. Although, in the context, it would appear our crazy fuckers have a unique way of being crazy fuckers.

I'm glad they captured the shooter alive. Let's hope he gets a quick but fair trial before he's locked away for the rest of his life. I'm also hoping the people that have survived so far make recoveries.
Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

I would prefer to string him up. An individual who would randomly or calculatingly fire a weapon into a crowd of people containing children is an immediate threat to society. Of course, you could always send him to a special camp.

Why is lynching always the answer?

It isn't lynching, it is execution. Who needs a mob? Also, it depends on the question you are asking.

What does two plus two equal?

Lynching!

Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

If you want them to suffer, there are more effective ways.

If you just want them to die, there are more effective ways.

Why go with an antiquated form of execution that isn't that good at either?

My thoughts and sympathies are with Congresswoman Giffords, and I hope she recovers from this tragic event. No elected official should fear assassination for doing their job.

After a bit of investigation, the shooter (Jared Lee Loughner) appears to have been a mentally-unbalanced conspiracy theorist.

It is cheap, reuseable, and relatively devoid of pain- so far as we know. I am not going for suffering, I merely believe that this individual is a threat to society and that supporting him with the prison system is not nearly as economical as stringing him up.

I know it is, but I'm studying to be a psychologist. Some day, I'm going to owe it to someone who was also victimized by a paranoid schizophrenic a why, a how, and a what. I smell something funky in the air, I'm going to be all over it, and this shooting really rattled my nerves.

I suppose Loughner has no DIRECT connection to the Tea Party, and I'll honestly say that the majority of the Tea Party aren't diseased... But I'm afraid dismissing that he was inspired by extremist talk is ignoring the obvious. Obviously, Sarah Palin had nothing to do with the man, but she's not exactly helping the overall situation.

Regardless... I took a look at Loughner's YouTube stuff... Needless to say, I dunno what to think of it. I don't want to dismiss it as rambling bullshit, but it's really hard not to.

Which would suggest that perhaps the second amendment solution wasn't the basis of his attack.

Arizona got the death penalty. Once again has the police and various other agencies not been able to stop an act of terrorism on American soil.
Let's hope the rest of this terror cell dies in a shootout with the police.

It is horrible that Mrs Gifford got shot, but the real tragedy is the inocent bystanders that got killed and injured. Gifford's staff should have made sure that the security was better. It is not like she is the least controversial politician in the US. Sending her out in the public without a security team is reckless.

Those that said he wasn't connected with the Tea Party are right, apparently. And judging from his video, he's probably more of an unmedicated schizophrenic than a conspirator.

As I said before, we have to wait for the investigation before we can draw conclusions about what prompted this guy's actions, whether it be violent political rhetoric or the voices inside his head. But frankly, shy of command hallucinations, him being crazy doesn't preclude him being prompted by current political speech being bandied about. No one is suggesting that a Sharon Engle or Glen Beck instigated this shooting directly, but it is not unknown for crazy people to take seriously what someone else says as a joke or for rhetorical flair.

Plus there threats on Congressional members tend to be rare and low-key. They had nothing to make them suspect someone would try to kill Giffords.
